I first grew the lavender form of Salvia coccinea many years ago and, although the color is lovely, it doesn't have the best form in the world.
Tropical Sage (Salvia coccinea 'Lavender Form')

Alana ( @poisondartfrog ) and I were talking last year about how breeders should be working with this interesting color to improve form and floriferousness. It appears that Takii was doing just that and has now added Salvia Summer Jewel™ Lavender to its Summer Jewel series of Salvia coccinea. Like the others in that series, it is an AAS Flower Award Winner (2016.)

I know that I'll be keeping an eye out for these seeds to try. Big Grin
If anyone grows it next year, please be sure to post about it in the database.
Hummingbird Sage (Salvia coccinea Summer Jewel™ Lavender)

@Gerris2 - If memory serves, I believe that I got my original seeds of 'Lavender Form' from a trade with you so I thought that you might be interested in this introduction, too. Smiling

Edit, luvsgrtdanes' database photo taken in 2016.

Wow I didn't know there was a lavender colored variation! This one DEFINITELY will go on my list for spring as I had "Summer Jewel Red" , my first of this species, this year and it has done very well- actually still is because it hasn't yet been cold enough to freeze. Thanks for the info and glad to know I can get it at FBTS. Smiling

I'm trying to resist getting new seeds this year, but I'll have to make an exception for this one. It seems that it is too early to find it in the seed catalogs yet. If anyone spies the seeds for sale, please give me a heads-up! Big Grin

Since Kermit stated he's going to offer it next year, I'm going to get it from him and hoping it isn't sold out when I do my ordering.

Salvia coccinea is so easy to grow from seed that I'd rather go that route, but I know FBTS will send you some gorgeous plants. Smiling

I contacted Harris Seeds and got a speedy reply of,
"Yes we are planning on offering Summer Jewel Lavender! We will probably have it available in the next few weeks." Hurray!

They often have a free shipping deal around the holidays so I'm really hoping they'll have it listed before that happens.

@Danita

Do you direct sow outside those seeds into containers after threat of frost/freeze has passed?

lol, Danita. I emailed them about it last night, before I saw your post.

My motley examples of lavender S. coccinea did not give me a single seed this year, at least none I saw, but if there were some it will likely reappear next summer. I hope SJ Lavender is a stronger grower.

Marilyn, S. coccinea self sows reliably for me every year in my just barely 7a, so direct sowing should be an option. I won't be that patient with this one. Smiling

Danita, I just got the same response from Harris you did. I will haunt their website until they are available because I'm afraid they will go fast.

Marilyn,
I usually start them inside but a lot of people will sow them in milk jugs "winter-sowing" style. However, they don't need the cold stratification so you can place them out in early spring rather than in early winter. They also self-sow here but with special, commercial seeds I'd still want to provide protection so they didn't wash away or become bird and rodent food.

Alana,
Great minds think alike, I suppose! Hilarious!
I'll be haunting their website as well! With the two of us determined vultures circling, we are bound to get some! nodding
If they price them like the others in the series, then I think I'll get the large pack since it is such a better deal and the seeds stay viable for years.

@poisondartfrog & anyone else wanting to order this seed.

No, Harris Seeds hasn't posted the seed on their website yet, but I did find a free shipping code that is good until March 1, 2016.
code: 6PRA024

Now we can all be ready to pounce on those Salvia 'Summer Jewel Lavender' seeds as soon as they appear and not even pay for shipping. Hurray!

I got impatient and decided to bug Harris about the seeds again. They replied that they should be listed in about a week or so and apologized for the delay. Green Grin!

Also, Flowers by the Sea has listed plants for pre-order on their website. Green Grin!

Hurray! Hooray! ....but oopsie! Hilarious!
Alana, I bet that if you call them today (by 1pm) that they will apply it for you (or email, possibly.) You could order one of the smaller packs of seed of something else for the same price as the shipping.

Totally off-topic but I really like the photo of the Viola 'Angel Tiger Eye Red'. However, their packs are a bit too large and, therefore, pricey for me to order. http://www.harrisseeds.com/sto...

The Salvia coccinea Summer Jewel™ Lavender listing isn't showing up on the Salvia listing yet so you can only find it by doing a search. Here is the link for those interested:

Hurray!
