Had planted caladium bulbs many years ago in that spot so was surprised when this showed up. I had thought they all died off -- so is this an EE? rather than caladium? It is much bigger than the caladium that grew before.

That one looks like a runner. Do you have it elsewhere in your garden? They can travel great distances.

There are a number of caladiums that have been renamed EE's and vice versa but that one sure looks like a EE to me.

Taro is a type of EE - right? Edible and can be had sometimes at markets far less than EE corms. But are all EE corms edible?

That's it! But can you imagine what my relatives and friends would say if I said: I wrap pork chunks in Colocasia esculenta leaves, then wrap the bundle in Cordyline fruticosaa leaves and steam until cooked? Big Grin

Thanks, Rainbow, for the link...it's EE colocasia esculenta not taro. I'm going to check out my mom's 'taro' plants...

You're right, nobody would say that, unless talking to other plant nerds. :+) And this is why one shouldn't eat via internet, by common name. I've seen poi recipes, the ingredient is always listed as "taro." It's all about the common parlance of the region. Where I come from, in OH, peas means green English peas. Here in AL, peas means blackeye peas. And taro has no meaning at all in either place, (besides maybe connecting to the also generic "elephant ear," which would be called a weed by most.)

Unfortunately, the article doesn't give the botanical name for the Taro about which the author is writing, or the elephant ear, that I could find. From the objections raised in the comments, I'm not sure I trust the author.

I'd encourage you to find something on an .edu or professional culinary site.

There are several articles on eattheweeds.com, a site that focuses on plants found (wild or native) in the US. Link to "taro" search there:

Here's a photo of my C. esculenta 'Chicago Harlequin' - taro- according to Dave's former site. So the above photo is an Alocasia - and not Colocasia according to the shape of the leaves.

OK, I rescind my earlier input of C. esculenta for your 1st pic. Where the veins come together & meet petiole, there's a distinct difference, and the lobes are not as pointed on the 2nd pic you put. I don't have the knowledge to extrapolate Alocasia from your 1st pic, but can agree with "not C. esculenta." Sorry, I got bored enough today to break my rule of not getting involved in ID discussions for which I'm not really qualified, but did learn something.

The same thing happens every winter, even for house plant chat. I don't understand it.

Earlier when I said, That's it! ...I was referring to taro. Sorry for the confusion, and I agree @purpleinopp, the first picture is not of a C. esculenta. Colocasia esculenta is the scientific name for the culinary taro, but there are many varieties.

And to make things even more confusing, I found this in the ATP Alocasia data base: "Elephant's Ear (Caladium praetermissum 'Hilo Beauty')."

@ardesia, you're right, Caladiums are also referred to as EE's.
From Wikipedia: Caladium /kษ™หˆleษชdiษ™m/[2] is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. They are often known by the common name elephant ear (which they share with the closely related genera Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma).

So @piksihk, me thinks your Caladium survived, but changed its characteristics somewhat?

@DavidLMO, oh please don't eat just any ole EE. Sad

I wasn't planning on it at all. Smiling Just know that I gave seen Taro offered at one of the local markets and recently found out they are some type of EE. If I see them again, I will buy one to PLANT, not eat. nodding And I have no plans to eat my Alocasia or Colocasia EE.
