A hanging basket of white/green variegated Ivy. Nothing exotic (box store purchase), but I would like to keep it for next year. Any clue on how cold hardy they are outside? I don't want to bring it inside before the temperatures start falling below freezing which should be soon, but not just yet. I've taken it down from it's hanger and have it in a pot until I bring it in so it's not high up off the ground.......Maryl

Are you able to add a pic? There are so many diff ones. You probably want anecdotes from those who have the exact same one. Was there a botanical name on a label?

Thanks Tiffany for responding. Our first hard freeze came last night ( & Sunday AM), so I brought the plant into my unheated garage as I knew it probably wouldn't take temperatures in the mid 20's. The tag had the usual informative label on it that said: "Ivy" , but it reminds me somewhat of the nursery standard "Glacier". You are right about there being many different variegated Ivies. I never did find out what cold hardiness is in general for the variegated types. I'm assuming they don't do 20's or less well just because variegated plants as a rule are a bit more tender (and mine is in a small pot to boot). I was just curious as to hardiness in general and wanted to know if they could take temps in the 30's.........Maryl

I don't know much about ivy, but I do have a potted variegated Hedera canariensis that's been outside for 8 yrs. It was on the back porch of the house I rented. The lowest temp I'm aware of in that time was 9 degrees. I never do anything to it but wind the long stems back up the arms of the hanging pot when they get long, a couple times per year. For the past 4-5 yrs, it's been hanging in a tree at my Mom's house. Better to be safe than sorry though, if there's any uncertainty (and you would be upset if your plant didn't make it.) If you get a 2nd pot of it going, you could experiment with 1 next winter.

Could it be ? If it is, it can take a lot of below freezing temps. This is what I believe to be growing on my birdbath (mine was sold as variegated English ivy). If it were in the ground instead of a clay pot, I think it would survive any winter weather that would arrive in upper central Texas. Since it's in a container, I tend to set it in the garage when the temps get in the teens. Sometimes I'll bring it in just because I don't want the clay pot to bust, but if I haven't given it water recently I'll leave it out for 20sF temps.
