I'm looking for Thanksgiving cactus cuttings. The leaves are rounded as seen in the picture and the flowers are orangey-pink, tubular, and not "double" like modern hybrids. I can trade some red or white Christmas cactus cuttings. Thanks for your help! My grandmother had a Thanksgiving cactus and I'm rather nostalgic about getting some cuttings! I am new to ATP, but I've been a member of Dave's Garden for 11 years. My beautiful friend from Texas told me about your site. I don't want to post her name, but if you message me, I'll share her name. Thanks so much!

Hi froggiesgirl, Welcome from me too and how nice of your Texas friend to point you in the direction of All Things Plants! You will love it here ... many of us came here from the Dave's Garden site (DG was created and originally owned by the family who own All Things Plants!) We have a great group of friendly gardeners here on ATP and we love chatting about our favorite plants and sharing photos and information. This is the kindest and friendliest gardening site on the world wide web and we have the most up to date and accurate plant database too!

There is a lot of confusion regarding "Holiday Cactus", especially the ones commonly called "Thanksgiving" Cactus and "Christmas" Cactus. I guess there have been so many hybrids created over the years that it's probably very difficult to figure out what's what anymore. You might like to read this interesting article that was written by one of our members here on All Things Plants and describes the differences between the holiday cactus: http://garden.org/ideas/view/S...

You can also view lovely photos and read about different cultivars in our database: http://garden.org/plants/searc...

And, I hope someone with the exact plant you are looking for pops in and offers to share cuttings!

Again, Welcome!

Lin

Thank you all for the friendly and warm welcome!

Lin, I have read so many articles that my eyes hurt! What I'm looking for is someone who has a plant that is an heirloom, passed down from a grandmother, etc. that has not been hybridized. I just know the segments are rounded (not pointed) and the flowers are a tubular, orangey-pink, and does not look like one of the "double-flowered" hybrids. That's what my sister remembers. I remember the cactus always being on granny's porch, and we were allowed to look, but not touch! I was just too young to remember!

Maybe @JB can help you. She is very knowledgeable in that area and has done some extensive research (if I remember correctly). In fact, she sold (I'm not positive that she still does, but I hope so, as I'd like to get some from her) a variety of Schlumbergera x buckleyi--christmas as well as thanksgiving cactus.

Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! It is so nice to see you here! I wish I could help you out. That is a houseplant I have never had luck with so I stopped buying them. Sighing!

BTW, that is a great article.

Please email me the question and I will try and reply. I just wrote a long reply here but it went away and did not print. This is one reason no one has heard from me. For some reason I am unable to post on ATP most of the time. [email protected] is my email addy. Feel free to contact me but please put ATP in the subject to I do not ignore you.

I really think this is exactly what you are wanting especially seeing the pics beside each other. The bloom is a salmon color (Moma's description of the color). This is the one that the original plant belonged to my great grandmother. Send me your address so when I get it to get a few roots I will put it in the mail to you

You have the ID's in reverse. 'The way you can tell the two apart is by looking at the edges of their flattened stems, which are called cladodes. The edges, or margins and Christmas cactus cladodes, above, tend to be somewhat rounded. Meanwhile, those of Thanksgiving cactus, at left, tend to be somewhat pointed.' Ettinger's
From link: http://www.tlehcs.com/question...

I never saw one w/o a double flower. That will be something to see. My psuedo grandmother's plant is how I learned to love them too! Good luck!
