I often use mycorrhizae and have good experience. I have done a number of experiments when potting up seedlings, transplanting, etc. Wherein I add mycorrhizae to some and withhold from others - same species, same growth size, same seedling batch and so on. A pure experiment with the only test condition being using mycorrhizae in some plants and not others.

The results have shown that the plants with mycorrhizae added develop larger root system and are in general "better" plants in terms of size, color, blooming and so on.

There is some info (but not a lot) I have found on the net of the benefits of mycorrhizae for Plumeria. There is tons of info showing the benefits for plants in general and many specific plants.

I am wondering if any of you have tried adding mycorrhizae when starting cuttings and/or potting up/transplanting rooted cuttings? And if so, what has been your experience?

Since I have a newly acquired cutting and rooted plant purchased from Ken, I will be in a position in a few months to benefit from experience that any of you all have.

A fungus that is to a greater or lesser extent always available in most all soil. Many quality potting mixes have it added now a days. I intentionally add it on a regular basis to transplants. I use the product Mycos.

From this web site (lots of good info here):

http://mycorrhizae.com/

“Mycor” – “rhiza” literally means “fungus” – “root” and defines the mutually beneficial relationship between the plant and root fungus. These specialized fungi colonize plant roots and extend far into the soil. Mycorrhizal fungal filaments in the soil are truly extensions of root systems and are more effective in nutrient and water absorption than the roots themselves. More than 90 percent of plant species in natural areas form a symbiotic relationship with the beneficial mycorrhizal fungi.

Example with (left) and without added mycorrhizae.

I think you can do that, but not during winter. Plumie cuttings are asleep and if there are any rooted ones right now, they may be on a slowdown, so I do not think it is right timing. Maybe when you repot in Spring, you can experiment with it. But I will let the cutting sleep for now.

Will give it a try late winter/early spring. Cutting is asleep and rooted cutting looks to be going to sleep. My one and only bigger guy seems to be falling asleep as it is starting to drop leaves.

Will let people know if I feel that it has worked - but since I cannot do an experiment, will be hard to make a conclusion.

***Bringing this back up for input from Group...

I'm contemplating adding it to my Miracle-Grow Cactus/Pumice/Lava mix in the Spring when I up-pot all my Plumerias into their 10 gallon squat pots...

Opinions ?

In general, I don't trust Miracle Gro products to be pure. While it sounds like a lovely mix for plumeria, Miracle Gro tends to put what they want in their products. Take soil, for example. They say it contains fertilizer but wont say the NPK. They have to sell "Organic" soil because of those who additives to basic potting soil.

Personally, I think you'd be better off making your own mix from scratch, adding to it what you want and what is good for the plant that goes in it. JMHO because you asked. nodding

the Cactus Mix NPK is only 6-2-4 according to the pkg. I mainly choose it for the convenience.

Will have to put 10 in _each pot in the Spring when they come out of dormancy & I up-pot them into their 10 gallon squat pots.
