New plant, found these spots.

From what I can see in the photo it could be insects of some type but it's difficult to tell. Please provide a bit more information.
Where are you located?
What kind of plant is it?
Indoors or outdoors?

Can you tell us what kind of plant it is? The picture isn't quite sharp enough, if you can try to re-take with a piece of white paper behind it the camera may focus more on the leaf. From the current image my suggestion would be to look at pictures of "edema" on Google, you may need to add the word leaf or leaves to the search box so that you don't get medical pictures. somehow it looks like scale. try some alcohol swab if it gets removed.

When in doubt, do the easy thing first.

Try spraying them off with a hard, fine mist of water.

If that doesn't work, wipe gently with rubbing alcohol on a swab or bit of tissue.

Still there? Consider spraying with insecticidal soap, if you still can't get a pest ID. To me, that looks like an advanced infestation of SOMETHING. I just hope those bumps are not egg masses.

Do you have enough room that you can quarantine them to protect other houseplants?

As RickCorey mentioned, you can soak a cotton ball with Isopropyl alcohol and wipe the leaves which should remove them if the infestation isn't too great; otherwise an insecticidal soap (which can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart etc.) might be necessary.

Spray with Insecticidal soap. If still there in 3 days spray with Neem oil. I don't like to screw around personally, and that looks serious. You may have to spray every 3 - 4 days for a couple of weeks - particularly if it is scale. But it does not look like scale to me Opinions differ. It looks like white fly eggs to me.

Lin - whatever it is, they don't want it. Over many, many years I have had plants attacked by every pest possible. On many occasions. If I could see those things closer, I could likely figure it out.

Absolutely agree, a sharper picture should enable a diagnosis. The reason I was suggesting oedema/edema, depending how you spell it, was because of the inconsistency of size (and not so symmetrical shape) as it seemed to me, but whether that's because the picture isn't clear is difficult to say. The photography forum had many tips about taking close-up photos (Macro Mode in many cameras).

But it got pretty technical. I found a cheap tripod at Goodwill Industries; that's about the limit of my photo expertise.

One thing Shudgens could do is try to remove a spot or two. If they come off it's some kind of insect, if they don't then it's more likely oedema or some other undetermined disorder.

Mostly, usually. But if you can go straight to curing the problem without risking damage to the plant, but a diagnosis would require learning photographic techniques and waiting around ... cure, baby, cure!

In this case, it's an option because alcohol wipes and soap spray won't harm a plant even if ALL the diagnoses are wrong.

The TV show "House" bothers me because he's always trying to diagnose by treating prematurely: "Let's give her THIS because she might have THAT. If she gets better, my diagnosis was right and I get to be even more arrogant. If it kills her, I don't much care, except for the fact that I was wrong."

Why do people LIKE that show?!?

Depends on the plant, there are some that are sensitive to and can be damaged by soaps and oils, not that I'm suggesting that would happen here and they're both things I would try myself for insects/mites if not contraindicated, but we don't know what kind of plant it is. That's another thing that would help both with the diagnosis and the most appropriate cure. It looks like a cutting. Anyone hazard a guess as to what it might be?

On the second topic, not a fan of the show either but maybe people just like Hugh Laurie?

He does project a lot of charisma, but the basic premise of the character offends me: "I can be infinitely obnoxious because I can get away with it". It doesn't seem to be written to indicate "constant pain causes some people to be flaming, vicious jerks". besides, we probably all know someone who manages a lot of pain better than that character.

My theory is that a lot of people enjoy seeing someone get away with things because they would like to be able to get with that kind of thing. If that's the case, the only episode of the show I "approve of" is the one where he got thrown in jail in part for breaking a law ... but mainly for being a jerk to someone with more power than he had.

I cheered that day! He got what he deserved! (Not that I would ask to get what I deserve! I'd rather have mercy if I can get it, any day.)

But I should confess - I watch it fairly often. Maybe that makes me a jerk-wannabe, too!

You obviously do watch it more than I do I thought his fake American accent was pretty good, though, some are terrible. Is it convincing to you (I'm a Brit by origin so not a good judge)? I guess we're risking Sandbox here......

If House were diagnosing this, he'd have everyone on the thread either in tears or a homicidal rage, and almost kill the plant four different ways to disprove three wild diagnoses.

We have enough regional accents that anything that isn't quite right just sounds like he must have spent part of his youth in some area I never lived in.

Someone claimed that many Brit shows will only hire Brit actors, so when they need to portray an American, they do it by dressing him in loud, clashing colors and giving him boorish, crude manners. So that we'll know he must be American!
