Thread OP

I just received some very special sweet potatoes in the mail, they had been packed loosely in a plastic bag, and have grown a bit of white mold- not a lot. How do I remove this and keep the tubers healthy for growing starts from? I only want to remove the mold, without damage to tubers...

Sweet potatoes need to be cured before storeage to prevent them from molding. Perhaps they weren't cured. Also putting them in a plastic bag could have stimulated the mold if they weren't cured. I'd cut off the mold and cure them by keeping them in a warm place until the new cuts dried over. Here's a link that tells you about it.

is there a way to wash it off without damaging the tubers? Can I use a bleach water wash, or something similar?

You could also try cinnamon. Someone suggested I try that on some potatoes I wanted to plant. I put them in a plastic bag, poured cinnamon, shook until they were coated. Took them out & planted a couple days later. It worked!!!

I know that people use cinnamon on Dahlia bulbs to keep them from rooting. Smiling

@tveguy3 Tom -- was that supposed to be "to keep them from molding" ?

Oh dear, I'm loosing it! Hilarious! Yes it think I may have been wanting to say rotting, or molding would have been a better word to use.

Oh, I see it now -- mind thinking "rotting," fingers doing "rooting." Funny how that can happen, isn't it?? Just didn't want you to scare anyone off from using cinnamon because it would prevent rooting! Hilarious!

If you have at least a 100 days of growing season you should be able to have some success with them. Good luck and keep us informed! Smiling
