What type of plant to you tend to have the most of in your garden? Which is your favorite (this year)?

Actually, Daylilies. Not necessarily by design...it has just kind of happened!

Most recent Daylily, planted last year - finally found my notes and can id this from Countrygardens as Night Beacon. I love the velvety look of this flower.


Banned in Boston had since 2008. Not looking so good this year. In a hot spot...some of the leaves have a bit of brown on them.

Bonanza. Purchased in 2004.


Halls Pink. Purchased maybe 8 years ago. It never really looks pink although in this photo it is a little visible...wonder if it is properly named. I do still have the tag.


Here is a NO ID had since 2010 This one produced a couple flowers a month or more ago and then new sprouts came up for another round of flowers. The plant is very small, did not grow much at all.


I have one other Daylily on the back side of the house I have to check on. No flowers from it at all, and is a NO ID.

Daylilies are so hard to resist because they are so diverse in color, size, and shape. I have mostly hosta, with daylilies coming up a close second, then lilies and many other perennials. More shade areas than sun, so more shade stuff. Next year I am gonna work harder to have zinnias through all the sunny areas. I've had them before in a couple of places, and they are real work horses for bloom til it freezes outside.

So CJ, if I asked you what your favorite hosta was...would you be able to pick just one?

One annual that I always have is salvia they go into fall very well. Love the bright red.

No one favorite, usually a few favorites for the year. They are in such different stages of growing, and most beautiful when they are mature (usually 4-5 years). Then there's moles, voles, not enough rain, etc., so that some perform better than others different years. One that I think is under-appreciated because it is an older variety that does amaze me each year with it's pattern and colors is ventricosa Aureomarginata.. If it was a more recent hybrid, everyone would just have to buy it.

I really enjoy the combinations of hostas together in a garden, with the colors playing off one another. Also the different textures and shapes. Sometimes it is the way a leaf sways in the wind. Some of the new ones that hybridizers are showing pictures of on the seedgrower's site amaze me for their number of colors on one leaf, streaks, beautiful flowers, etc. etc

I am about the same way about daylilies. Can't pick one favorite. Love combinations or that they bloom late, or hav amazing color or size or shape. Glad I don't have to pick just one of any plant, I guess.

I had a feeling that you would not be able to pick just one...but I thought I would ask just in case you might surprise me I have 5 hostas and enjoy them for much the same reason as you describe. I've only had one of them long enough to say it is truly "mature". I'm patiently waiting for the others to show some real substantial growth.

How many daylilies do you have?

The photos are all the ones I have. I do not have "a lot" of any one thing. Daylilies is what I have "the most of one kind of plant" I do not have alot of garden space, and I don't want to limit myself so I have a little of this and that

I suppose you have about 100 hostas??? (wild guess here).

Over 500 hosta and over 400 daylilies. Just over 100 lilies. (At least until the moles and voles get through with me again this year and I do a physical check to see that they are all still around).

Goodness, it must take quite a system to keep that all organized...and cared for!

oh, by the way. How do you folks keep those critters from eating all your lillies? I love them and have quite a few, but I am getting tired of having them eaten all the time. any ideas for larger gardens, not just a couple lily bulbs. thanks doglover (Marsha)

I have some wire fencing around some of my gardens. The small critters seem to bother mostly the stuff in the way back of my yard. The 2 foot wire fencing at this point, is not too unsightly. It also helps to keep my dogs from running through the gardens too. Luckily the gardens in my front yard, at this point, aren't bothered, so I have no fencing around those ~j

I have lots of oriental lilies and the orienpet lilies, I sprinkle Rabbit Scram on in spring, again end of July and then again after it freezes. Rabbits have left my alone ever since. When I plant the bulbs I sprinkle cayenne pepper on all bulbs before covering with soil. No more vole problems.

I also have a lot of Rudbeckia, Shasta's and coneflowers. Lavender too.

Daylilies, followed by lilies, echinaceas and hostas. Have a growing fondness for phlox!

I never did state what I have most of - daylilies, followed by TB iris, then a few Hosta and Coral Bells, the a sprinkling of other stuff.

And weeds, I have mostly weeds. Lots and lots of them, of every shape and size! ~Jan
