Looking for recommendations for an online site for the 'just add water' Amaryllis Kits.

Thanks!

Most of the online nurseries sell the Amaryllis already planted in pots. Try Amaryllis Bulb Company or White Flower Farm. Shipment should be pretty fast right now.

Did you order one? If not, some retailers have their amaryllis kits on clearance now that the holiday is over.

The bulbs started now, as the day length increases should bloom quickly.

They arrived before Christmas .. I ordered the Dancing Queen for my parents and brother and sister in law and 2 Dancing Queen and 2 Double Record for myself but they were out of them and got 2 Peacock doubles. Will these be hardy in zone 8? After they bloom I'd like to put them in the ground.

I already have Alfresco and was told it's not hardy in my zone.

They are borderline hardy in zone 8. People are successful in growing them in your zone, with special attention paid to winter temps. You can certainly try planting them in a sheltered location, near a south or west facing wall, which will radiate some heat at night in the winter. Mulch in the winter, use a frost blanket if frost is expected. Another way is to plant them in a good sized pot, sink the pot up to the rim in the ground. That's insurance in case of a severe, long subfreezing spell. Worse case, pull up the pot, and bring it into the garage until it warms up. Moisture in the winter is as much of a danger as the cold. Beware of rain runoff from the roof and lawn irrigation during midwinter which may keep the bulbs too wet, promoting rot.

Thanks Barbara .. I guess I'll keep them in pots since percolation of water is not very good here.

Well I'm happy to say that all but 1 of my Amaryllis I ordered performed beautifully .. the one called Peacock looked bad when I received it and the bud it has produced looks even worse. I've contacted the company and hopefully they'll give me a replacement or a refund.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with this bulb? Is it a disease?

I can't really see much with the tag in the way, but this looks as if it is more of a problem with the scape. I'm wondering if you might have an insect larva inside. One time I had a big fat caterpillar crawl out of a bud which looked like that. Its mother had laid the egg on the bulb before shipment. Try cutting off the whole scape and see if the bulb will put up a second healthy scape. You should get a credit or replacement for this.

Thanks Barbara, the bulb itself looks fine. I'll do as you suggested.

Anna, I'm sorry to hear about the less-than-stellar bloom. I hope you're able to get a second bloom out of it. (By the way, I like your picture-in-picture.)

Barbara, thank you for the good advice on what to do. I haven't had that issue yet, but I've tucked it away in my head for the future if that happens to me or someone else I know.
