This is an example of bud building scapes. This is LILLIAN'S FUNKY SPUNKY last year.

This is it blooming on those same scapes, the scapes get taller and taller durning the bud building process.

Fantastic pictures! I've been trying to envision what you-all mean by bud building, and now I think I understand.

Wow, that one is quite some bud builder. I wasn't sure what they looked like myself. Thanks for posting that pic.

Yes, bud builders have a distinctive spiral effect to the way the scapes look.

Funky Spunky is just that. Love it.
Betty I would love to see both of those used with a lot of things. They are really nice. Bud Building would be a bonus.

I have a few bud-builders in my garden. Firestorm usually does it and I've discovered that Orange Aglow does it too( I really like this one, It's been blooming since late June!!!). I think 1 or 2 of my firestorm babies have inherited this trait. I'll know for sure if they do it next year as well. I really like this in a plant. Smiling

The green scapes are the rebloom scapes. I had three fans in my display area and those three fans produced 197 blooms on six scapes. I think this is the only plant I have that does this. I have had others but they have been away from for a number of years.

I have Firestorm so glad to hear that. I have heard that Lullabye Baby and Northwind Dancer are bud builders.

I tried to get a good photo of how the ends of the bud builder scapes look like spirals compared to "regular" scapes. It was not easy to show the spiral effect! My best bud builder is a seedling of mine. It is nearly 4 feet tall, and I am only 5 feet tall. I could not get above it enough to look down on the end of the scape to show it from above. Since it starts blooming mid season and often blooms till mid October - or even until November -- selfish me did not want to cut the scape off to take the photo... Whistling

So I tried to show it from the side. Fred's photos above must have been bud building for a long time! I wonder if my seedling would do that if I lived in an area where it could continue to bloom for months without winter freezing it out?

The branching on my seedling is not the best - but by the time winter stops it from blooming it normally has a bud count per scape of 40-50. I'll probably name it, just because I have used it and have a friend who wants the pollen to use... but may never introduce it. I crossed it this year onto a big, 5-1/2 foot tall blooming thing that instant reblooms. Blinking Blinking Big Grin

The spiral bud builder on the left. A regular scape on the right for comparison.

All of the bud builder seedlings I have had have come from Pee Wee's Big Adventure. (I hate that name!)

Another flower that has been a consistent bud builder for me is Crown of Creation. This plant does really well for me, but down the road 2 miles, has not been a bud builder for my friend Bob. (shrugs shoulders). He got his plant from me.

Good example Juli, you can see what branching thats on mine is below the major bud building process, some of the branchs will build buds but not anything like the main scape.

I am really interested in bud builders. This plant is one of my best. Click later today - I just uploaded photos etc. to this in the database so give Sue time to approve it.
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Arrogant Bastard') I don't like the name, but it does fit this plant. It really says "Look at ME!"

Thanks Stephanie,
I have noticed some curly scapes in the garden, but nothing that tall. I thought the scapes were
just being weird this past year. Now, I will have to pay more attention. Don't know which
ones I noticed the curly scapes on.

Just make a note of those you see this season and check the seedlings often once they start.
