Hello,
This wildflower grows around our southeastern New Mexico home at 6500 foot elevation. I've been searching on the web and in my only wildflower book, and I haven't found it. Anyone know this?

I thought it was a Cleome, so did a little poking around and found this in the Wiki Cleome article, 2nd paragraph:
"However, a recent DNA study failed to separate Cleome, Podandrogyne, and Polanisia from each other, so some taxonomists have abandoned the last two of these genera, treating them as part of Cleome..."

That was my initial identification as well, then I went to the above New Mexico site. I wonder what zuzu makes of the genera question? @zuzu

You all are really good! I'd spent a good half hour last night looking in NM wildflower websites, and I totally missed that one. It's one of my favorites in Spring around here. It also seems to have fragrance at night. It's wonderful to walk around and smell it and the daturas blooming.

It will be interesting to see what Zuzu wants to do with this one.

It's true that many of the Polanisia species have been reclassified as synonyms of Cleome species, but our database entries are up to date. The Polanisia species listed there, including P. dodecandra and its subspecies, are still accepted names. The Catalogue of Life cites September 2015 as the date of the latest taxonomic scrutiny, so the "recent DNA study" would have to be very recent indeed to have refuted the existing data.

The status of botanical names is always subject to change, however, and our entries will be updated if and when these changes occur.
