Well, almost Christmas so Winter really is upon the country. Yup, it has been mild so I hope that keeps up.

All the veggies are long gone, plants pulled out and gardens readied for spring.

Let us continue out discussions about what is going on in and for our veggie gardens. I think many of us will spend the winter looking at those seed catalogs.

I was making a frittatta for breakfast this morning (veggie omelet, really) and was able to harvest a few things, thanks to the nice, warm weather . .


Now please don't think I'm rubbing it in here but you guys/gals torture me all summer with your pictures of luscious tomatoes and other produce while my garden is out there growing weeds in the killer heat. My tomato plants bear all winter and spring, if I can keep them healthy but fizzle out usually by early June. They can't take the hot nights. So the veggie growing is confined to the moderate weather months here, just like it is for you (only other months).

Thanks, Rita. The frittatta was delicious, too. Should have taken a picture of it as well . . . but we were hungry!

Elaine, I love to see what you southerners (and southern hemisphere people) are doing this time of year... those peppers and tomatoes look delicious!

Yup, food usually gets eaten up before one thinks of taking pictures.

I also enjoy seeing what our southern gardeners are harvesting while we northerners are just beginning to plan our gardens. What a beautiful photo, Elaine.

Well, I've planted some snap peas, and beets in one of my Earth Boxes. They are just up, and wouldn't you know the cool weather is over for another week, and it's supposed to be 80ish for high and 60's as the lows. I'll have to rustle up some shade cloth to keep those poor little cool weather lovers even close to "cool". Maybe in January I'll get to plant some spinach!

I'm not complaining, mind you. It's perfect weather as far as being comfortable to work outside. Of course, the tomatoes continue to set fruit as well, which is a lovely reward. The bugs are liking the warm weather, too. Pepper plants are looking a little sad with some sort of whitefly infestation all over the backs of the leaves.

I'm another southern garden just beginning to enjoy tomatoes. Watching lots of new plants coming up and still getting a little okra but not so much with the cooler weather. Squash and cukes are blossoming like carzy. May get strawberries from plants I brought back from Ca. (shsss). As always, this seed junkie could spend 24 hours a day planting new seeds, then losing trck of who is where. We have a roselle which may be a volunteer. It's beautiful and sharing space with Heavenly Blue morning glories. No snow for me. kb

An exciting time in the garden. I love when my veggies start to flower so I know fruit will soon set.

im southern gardener but not that southern. Have rutabagas, chard, arugala and lettuce. I'm going to try a recipe for arugala pesto. and mashed rutabaga for Christmas dinner!

I was out smelling my night-scented Brugs last night and did shoot some flash pics of my peas and beets. Hoping the white cover on the Earth Box will keep the soil from getting too hot this week.

Anybody got an idea why pumpkins develop a bitter taste? My daughter grew the same variety, Baby Bear, both last year and this year. She wanted to grow the same kind again because last year they tasted so very good. But this year she says they had a slight bitter taste to the flesh. We used the same soil amendments, and the same fertilizer both years, too.

LOL, Elaine -- I often end up picking stuff into my shirt, too!

Can't think why the pumpkin would seem bitter -- unless it isn't fully ripe? Or maybe didn't get enough water along the way? Were the seeds from the same pack as the ones used last year?

Hurray on the tomatoes. And I don't know anything about pumpkins sorry.

This is unconfirmed but I read on the companion gardening forum that if you grow winter squash next to melons they get bitter tasting. Could there have been melons growing next to the pumpkin?

Nope, just a couple of tomato plants, and they were at least 6ft. away.
