I find it so interesting to see them grown this way!

I would love to see these creations too. I have always wanted to try growing from seed, but I never seem to get started.

PP ... the only roses that grow true from seed are species roses. Anything else is either open pollinated or a deliberate cross by a breeder.
I'd rather weed than dust ... the weeds stay gone longer.

Here you go, Keith. The only roses I have grown from seeds. This is a strain of mini roses called Angel Rose. There are four or five (or maybe more from self seeding) different colors. On the left there is a white one and a dark pink one. The others are shades of lighter pink. These have turned out to be a beautiful space filler behind my "succulent bench".

They were very easy to grow from seeds. I purchased the seeds from a seed catalog but it was so long ago I forget which one.

What I wanted to try was collecting seed from some of my old garden roses and seeing whether I could get them to grow. The pollen parent would be unknown, but it would be fun to see what I got. Yes, I know, not a serious endeavor...

They do make an impact "en mass"! The blooms are tiny ranging from about the size of a dime to the size of a nickel or quarter across. They make up for size by being in these large clusters! And the really nice thing is that they have that old fashioned rose fragrance that is missing in so many modern hybrids.

Porkpal, give it a try!

Why not? At the very least you'll have free plants you grew and can be proud of 😀, if you get a beauty you can show her off in your garden and say "I grew this" proudly!

PP .... that's exactly how the breeders in the early 1800s "bred" their roses ... Smiling They planted roses that they thought would make good roses near each other and hoped that a wonderin' bee would spread the pollen to the right rose. They were quite serious about it and they did come up with some good roses.

Go for it PP Smiling

Anyone know a good source for rose seed? Connie mentioned she purchased her's from a catalog a while back. Sounds like a fun thing to try. I'm all ears!

Try from roses in your own garden for free!

Do crosses involving strikingly different roses work? I'm thinking of something like a hybrid multiflora crossed with an Austin or a hybrid tea?

I will make sure to leave some flowers on my roses this year to hopefully make seed. Guess I was too diligent in picking them to bring inside or clean up the plants Sighing! thank you for the reminder Smiling

I think one of our members stated that it is more likely that the blooms with fewer petals will have been visited by bees and thus have fertile seed.

Use the rose with fewer petals as the seed parent, and the Rose with many petals as the pollen parent. It could work between those.

Those of us who are just starting out by collecting likely looking hips are unlikely to know who the pollen parent is, and judging by the pictures Philip posted, the blooms are not going to help solve the mystery. However, I don't feel the fun will be spoiled at all.

You have to remove the pollen from seed parent day before so it doesn't pollinate itself, cover the bloom, and next day pollinate with whatever Rose you want and label. That's what I do.

Clearly you are more dedicated than I am - yet. So far I just collect promising looking hips and hope they contain fertile seeds. At this point I don't care much about parentage, I am just excited if anything grows.
