It has been a busy holiday season, but I ate way too much and need to get some exercise. So even though it is cold and damp I decided to make a start on weeding the henbit ( and others) out if the path.{crushed granite).Got one side done yesterday and this morning before my fingers, ears and toes said it was time to jump into a hot bath and warm up. Does anyone have any suggestions for cutting down on weeds germinating? I was thinking of using Preen. Any experience anyone?

I have not used Preen, but I have applied other pre-emergents and they help a lot. Here late September and again in February seem to be the best times.

I use Preen and it makes a huge difference in my small rock bed along the driveway and along the edge of a flower bed. It won't get rid of the weeds that already exist, only stops new seedlings from emerging. Works like a charm and I stock up when it goes on sale at Lowe's. I used a pre-emergent on the front lawn for the first time in October. Time will tell if it helps. What doesn't help is the neighbor who doesn't maintain his lawn. Grumbling I get his moles, too!

Hi @shadygreenthumb, how often do you apply it? I can set a calendar reminder for myself. And do you do it year round?

Preen? I think I just follow the directions on the box . But if memory serves me correctly (and it rarely does!) I apply it twice a year??

Teacup, the one I used most recently was the Nitro Phos product; I don't know whether it has a name.

Don't forget that Henbit is an edible weed/herb. High in iron, vitamins and fibre. It can be eaten raw or cooked. It is a member of the mint family. Chickens also like it.

Thanks @poohdaddy,
I had no idea! When I go out again I'll give it a little taste.
