Happy New Year!

I can't believe 2016 is here, and spring will be here soon. Which peony plants are you looking forward to seeing bloom?

I planted 18 new roots, and potted tree peony Houki. Our weather has been unseasonably warm, and wet. I planted the last of the roots today.

My older peonies remain dormant, however some of the newly planted roots, and Houki are growing.

There's at least a 3" layer of ice over mine now, Annette! I won't see anything above ground until at least late March. But I've already started ordering for fall 2016.....

I'll enjoy yours until mine are up! Thanks for the pics!

I think Houki will be fine, but Kirinmaru and Kopper Kettle have been mulched with pine straw for tonight's freezing temps.

Every year some of the new peonies put up stems in the middle of winter, and those stems wind up getting frozen and then die. I going to try to protect them this winter with styrofoam covers.

That sounds like a good idea, Annette. Are you using something like a Styrofoam ice chest or something specially made to act as a cloche?

I found some pipe covers yesterday in our basement. They're made out of styrofoam, and large enough to fit over the plants for now.

The styrofoam ice chest is a great idea! I have some, and I'll definitely use them if the plants continue to increase in size.

Happy New Year to everyone! Have been so busy for the past couple of days. I am glad to hear that you got all your peonies planted, Annette.

I am very excited about my garden 2016. I look forward to see some new peonies blooms this year. I hope that my itohs Lollipop and Singin in the Rain will bloom this spring. I also hope that my Yae Zakura and Joseph Rocks Tree Peonies will bloom this spring. As for the herbaceous peonies, I hope to get a bloom from the Pink Fernleaf as well as my other new purchases this past fall.

Happy New Year Karen! You have some wonderful blooms to look forward to this spring.

I have not heard of Magical Mystery Tour before, it's beautiful! I'm hoping to see blooms on my Nick Shaylor this year.

Kirinmaru and Kopper Kettle did fine overnight. Here are the faucet covers that I used to cover them this afternoon. We'll be having temps at or below freezing for the next few nights, so the covers will be put on the plants whenever the night temps are predicted to be below freezing.

I too have some new growths on my peonies. I think I will just let them be. I anticipate having many more freezing days ahead so covering them and removing them will be a pain. Good luck to you, Annette.

It was the warmest X'mas ever in Toronto 15 degrees C ( 59 F ) and I was keeping my fingers crossed. So far so good and no movements on peony side. Forsythia and haskap stared to flower though.... Temperatures started to get normal before New Year with some snow cover. Next couple of months will show us what to expect from spring.

I left the plants that sprouted in winter alone last year Karen, and all the stems died. They were so many of them, it would have been impossible for me to keep up with the number of them to keep covered.

I'm thankful only 2 of them sprouted this year, and they should be easy enough to keep up with.

Those faucet covers look like they should do the trick, Annette--I'll have to look for some of those for additional spring protection for mine! Wonderful idea! So looking forward to this spring!

Liz, I'll let you know how they work. I'm keeping the plants covered for the next 2 days.

Growing peonies in the south is definitely a challenge. Annette, I will need your advice to grow peonies when I move south someday! I hope these cold days will give you enough chilling hours for the peonies to form buds for this spring.

I purchased my first Itoh peony this past fall, 2015. I didn't know there were such things (until reading here in the peony forum in early fall 2015). I purchased the most common, and least expensive, Bartzella. I would love to have more, but the prices are high for me right now. I don't know how the Itoh(s) bloom, but hoping to see blooms on Bartzella this year. I purchased a 3-5 eye plant. It will be exciting to have a yellow peony.

Many moon ago I purchased this peony from I think a place like Henry Fields (or their subsidaries or partners) and it was posted in the catalog to be "YELLOW". Right! Angry

Maybe it meant the center to be yellow. A lot of places also advertise a cream color peony as being yellow. Nevertheless, your pink single is very pretty. I wonder if it is Sea Shell. If you are sent the correct Bartzella, it will definitely be yellow. I think you will like it very much. Its flowers are big, yellow, and stems very sturdy.

HoosierHarvester, 'Bartzella' is one of the finest Intersectional Peonies. You won't be sorry you purchased it. It's wonderful!

Glad to hear that Tracey. I use my other peonies for cut flowers. So having a yellow one at my farmer's market will be exceptional, as I've never seen any. Would love to have that coral color one. Will intersectional cross with the standard peonies if I try to hand pollinate?
