Yes, happy New Year. SoCal and and Baja California are due for some serious rain through the next week. It's finally happening. Yay. Our last proper rain was back in May.

Photo here of Dudleyas on the patio looking forward to a proper rinse.

Welcome! to ATP, Baja. Thanks for sharing photos of your Dudleyas. I don't know much about them. I remember you from DG and look forward to learning about and seeing more photos of your plants. We're glad to hear that you're finally getting some much needed rain. Thumbs up

Baja your Dudleyas look wonderful. I have never delved into those. Are those ones that you have native to Cali. ? I know there are some native Dudleyas from there but have not read enough to know what ones.

I posted a pic of this senecio vitalis a few weeks ago because it caught my eye the way the top was growing it looked very nice and full. I did not realize until the other day that is growing that way because it is cresting. How fun is that? I am not sure why it started this now but it is pretty tall on a small base. It will be to heavy for that bottom as it grows and I will need to chop the top and root it. I will wait till spring. Does anyone see why that would not work?

Welcome! to ATP, Baja_Costero.
Looking forward to seeing what you have been growing. Post lots of photos, please.

Also, check out the Plant Database. You can add your photos to that as well as look at photos already there. Plus there are many species needing photos and information about them.

Can you stake the senecio vitalis, Audrey? And see how long you can maintain it without cutting it off? I don't like stakes much, but sometimes........That's a fine looking plant.

Thank You! everyone! Earned my first acorns yesterday adding comments to plants.

I would not hesitate to chop that Senecio down to root the crest. Stability will definitely be an issue over time.

Audrey, Dudleyas are all native to the region, predominantly the coast. (Baja California, California, part of Arizona) The ones in that first picture are mutts (no ID), selected based on ease of propagation instead of pedigree.

Here's a picture of a different Dudleya that I put in the ground without a bunny guard (oops!). It ended up being chewed to a nub, or rather two closely spaced nubs. But it looks like I jumped in just in time for a save. Hurray!

Donald, it should hold itself upright for now so no dreaded stakes needed yet.

Greg, I have never seen them bloom and could not find any pics of that on the net but I really think it is cresting.

Hetty, are you just going to tease us? Pictures pretty please! How common is it for them to crest? Do they normally start out that way? Or do they do like mine and have to be chopped and rooted again to have that nice specimen look?

I got this plant originally in 2011 as a tiny cutting and it grew into a nice multi branch clump. I moved it out side after a branch got snapped off two early one spring and the mother plant froze. This cresting one is the branch that got snapped off and has not offset since then and it has been a couple of years.

Thanks Baja, we posted at the same time. Good info. Yep, I am not afraid to chop it. But, it is always nice to have confirmation.

Hi Guys,
Nice to meet you. Thanks for starting the cacti and succulent post. Looking forward to being a part of it. I'll get to posting my Avatar real soon.

Little about myself and gardening. Avid grower of Aloes, Agaves, and cactus. Love Euphorbias, Echinopsis and Trichocereus too Lovey dubby All of these suitable for zone 9b which is low Sonoran desert in Arizona. You know, the place with 2 seasons: Cold, and the other side--- Hot, Are you serious? and I'm in Hell.

Our Winter temps range from 47 to 65 in the day time in the 'Winter' with periods of rain and have nights of 26-43 degrees (usually all in one week. Rolling my eyes. ) This is from late November through very early February.

'Spring' ranges from the 60-85 in the day and from 37-47 at night. This is usually from February to the beginning of May. Perfect Paradise here. Hurray!

'Summer' starts mid May and lasts through early October and starts off at 85 and climbs to an average of 112 and has quite a few days at 115-118. Nights are in the 90s! Blinking

'Fall', if such an animal exists goes from mid October to late November and cools down Hilarious! into the 90s to low 60s very rapidly!

So there you have my growing environment! Anyone else out here with me?

I have to catch up with the post and go back and read to see where we are at and what we're talking about but looking forward to joining in. Oh, love succulents but not much of a grower of them out here. Make a joke; I call them chips and dip because that's what they turn into. They either fry to a crisp due to the heat and resemble potato chips or in attempts to keep them alive they become a pile of green gelatinous goo that resembles guacamole. See...chips and dip! Love hearing and learning about succulents though.

Anyone else avid fans of Agaves and Aloes and small 'bubble' type of cacti?

Here's some post for you guys of what I'm growing. Next post will be shorter!

Thank you needrain Thank You!

Also thanks for the warm welcome. Very kind of you. Lovey dubby
As we get into the posts I'll continue to put up more pictures.

Here's one of my favorites from a tiny little cacti I bought last Summer. It is only 5 inches around and about 3 inches tall BUT the bloom is even bigger!

Oh here's some more of my 'bubble bed'. Just a mix of little cacti ('bubbles) I put in an incredibly narrow space that is 14 feet long by 1 foot 4 inches wide! Had no idea what to do with it so this is what I came up with.

What are you growing?

Hello AgaveGirl1! Welcome! Glad to meet you and your collection!

It is raining here now, and more rain to Thursday, and I heard it was raining here a lot in December too. Been away for almost a month, just glad to be back and move on.

Thankful I amended the media on most of my succulents with chicken grit and pumice in late November, and have brought indoors the more tender ones, succulents are holding well.
