Brachychiton acerifolius, commonly known as the Illawarra Flame Tree. Probably my favourite trees. In North Queensland where the thick, tropical rainforest hugs the steep mountains, Flame Trees burst out in splendour in the canopy in summer.
I often have wondered why I like the tree so much. I think it is because in the humid tropics there is little or no indication of the changing seasons but Flames Trees brightly stamp the yearly cycle.
It is also a much loved street and park tree. These are flowering on the island at the moment.
Alas, this one is in a school ground and I would need permission to get closer.
