I very seldom buy an iris mostly for it's name, but I did get 2, one is Sammie's Jammies.

I got this one for my dog memorial bed in honor of one of my schnauzers who's name was Sammie. It hasn't boomed yet, but should next spring baring any issues. I like it well enough that I might have gotten it even if it had a different name.

I also got Man's Best Friend for that bed as well. (along with about 80 others that have noting to do with dogs! Hilarious! )

What irises did you get mostly for the name? Would you get it even if it wasn't such a nice one just for the name?

Jurassic Park is the first iris I got for the name. But it's pretty, too!

Blackbeard was the next and I really like it. I hope it blooms for me this Spring.

Silverado and few other country/western names, too.

I bought Doctor Who as much for the name as the iris. I grew up watching Dr. Who and still love the series (though not fond of the current Doctor). And in my garden of space agers and iris named for Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, etc. it seemed a perfect fit. If I really disliked the look of the iris I don't think I would have gotten it though.

I have tons of daylilies bought partly, if not entirely, for the name. Irises, not so much. I do presently have:

(we are SF fans here... but also rebloom)
(memorializing visits to Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park (but the images looked beautiful too))
(there are no glaciers at Glacier Point, but the name goes with... and we have also visited Glacier National Park)

I had this one in the past, bought almost entirely for the name, but it died, the replacements look dead, and I may not reacquire:

(I was a big fan of the original trilogy ("prequels" were awful; was disappointed in the current movie))

If the nursery ever responds, I have plans to acquire this year:

(DD graduated from Amherst College)
(my sister's name is Lois)

And this one (from a different nursery):

(DD's best friend Sara is a beautiful young woman (plus rebloom))

Already ordered for this year (the name factored into the decision, but was not the entire reason for the purchase):

(DH interested in space exploration, but this iris also has unusual standards and very clear colors, and is fragrant)
(the name almost says it all (song played on the radio when I was a kid), but this looks beautiful also)
(have driven through Mariposa many times so there are some fond memories associated with that, plus rebloom)

Irises that I am considering getting, in part because of their name:

(another 'Mariposa' memento, and also rebloom)
(have enjoyed 'Star Trek' since I was in high school, when the original series was on TV)
(a memorable kiss.. but also bubble ruffles)
(yes, it's a Dykes medalist - but I am thinking of the opening words of a certain song...)
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Never realized how many Iris I got strictly for the name. Hilarious!

Baby Blue Marine -- I like Marines. Smiling

Best Bet - favorite expression of someone I used to know and affectionately remember.

Best Friend - she gave me the gift certificate I used to buy it.

Bullwinkle - still a favorite.

Chicklet - favorite gum as kid.

Dancing Bunnies - I dunno, something about the name tickles me. Smiling

For Patsy Lou - my mother's name was Patricia Lou and her family called her Patsy.

Gizmo the Gremlin - the movie

Killarney Green - reminds me of a trip to Ireland taken in 1992.

Lest We Forget

Loon Lake - okay, don't be startled, but...we have mental illness on my father's side of the family and all of us--even those with the illnesses--look for humor where we can. We figure laughter is healthier than wrung hands. Big Grin

Men in Black - the movie

Mister Roberts - the movie

Murrah Memorial

Have Navajo family.
Navajo Code // Navajo Velvet

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Off to the Races - sister loves horse racing.

Polish Princess - my mother was Polish.

Private Eye - Nick Charles, Boston Blackie, Marlowe, Mannix...lots more, but you get the gist. Hilarious!

Shindig - never missed that show.

Made a memory bed for my sister's daughter Crystal (died 2010) and stepson Tracy (died 2008). Thankful to people like Tom and Arlyn for helping make it beautiful. Smiling Bought a slew of Iris specifically for the names of or associations with Crystal's four children, but not listing here because they are going to my sister when she and her husband buy a house later this year.
Crystal Beauty // Crystal Fountain // Crystalyn

Dark Crystal // Tracy's Sunshine

There's a very old classic science fiction novel called _She_. I'm thinking possibly the iris gets its name from the novel. It's about a totally knock-em-dead gorgeous femme fatale who is immortal. She's kind of evil, too, but unbelievably beautiful. In the end, they figure out what keeps her immortal -- if I remember rightly, been a long time -- and she crumbles into ashes. It's a compelling story, and the portrait of a woman they draw is powerful.

Just looked it up to refresh my memory. The novel is by H. Rider Haggard. That "She" is short for "She Who Must Be Obeyed."

The novel is called _She_, you understand, but in the story they often call her "She Who Must Be Obeyed."

Multiple movies have been made out of the book, too, from the silent era onward.

My mother was nicknamed She for She Who Must Be Obeyed by close friends who traveled a lot with her and my Dad, but that was in reference to Rumpole Of The Bailey who called his wife She.

I confess that with this next one, the name really helped me decide to get it. I was looking for a dark purple and how could I pass up one called Mister Three Wiggle? It makes me laugh.

I got it from Burgard's for the high price of $4!

I would like to add, that many of my Burseen's have outrageous names, but in their case I got them for the incredible looking blooms and the names are just icing on the cake! And it is pretty humorous icing!!

I'm a word person, and Brad Kasparek's inventive, and often absurd iris names
sometimes pulled me in. Serengeti Spaghetti just had a ring to it! (and I love purple and pink together).
