I recently purchased a giant white bird of paradise plant whose palm-like leaves extend about 13 feet high inside my home. I wanted to know if there's a good mister or extension of some kind that can help me reach the high leaves to keep them moist. I've looked online, but either they don't have very long (if at all) reach extensions, or reviewers criticize them for being poorly constructed. Thanks!

Humidity and wet leaves aren't the same thing. Getting leaves wet can cause surface pathogens to be able to take hold and thrive.

Welcome! Robertbruce. I sort of agree with @purpleinopp but if you have good air-movement, wet leaves matter not a bit. It looks like you have a large greenhouse and in that case, your humidity can be better controlled. With adequate humidity, misting would not normally be necessary. I guess if you really wanted to mist those huge, tall leaves, a ladder might be called for. I have to use a three-step stool in my orchid greenhouse to water/mist my plants. I wet the leaves of hundreds of plants routinely but I have a lot of fans that move air well. I know that they do well with what I do but also know they would not if I didn't have those fans going. I also mist/spray the plants in the AM so that their leaves will dry out by nightfall.

@robertbruce, take a moment and go to your profile so that you can enter your location. That would be your city/state and/or your USDA zone. Just click on that little "guy" in the upper left column, then click on "Change your public profile", enter the information on your profile page, and then scroll down to the bottom and click on "Save Your Changes". Then, every time you post something, your location will show in the upper right-hand corner of that post.

Hi @robertbruce Welcome! to All Things Plants from me too!

You can sit your Giant White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) on a tray of moist pebbles which will help to raise the humidity levels around the plant; just be sure to replace the water in the tray as it evaporates. Another suggestion would be to use a room humidifier; some are quite inexpensive and can be found at local Home Depot's, Lowes and Walmart. I agree with Ken, of utmost importance is good air circulation and a small fan on low setting will help with that.

@robertbruce. Tell us about your growing conditions. Do you think you have low humidity in the greenhouse? Now we know you are in MA and though your outside conditions will be far different from mine, we both overwinter our tropical plants in a greenhouse. Do you still use shade-cloth over your greenhouse? What is the configuration of your flooring?
