Sand Hill Preservation Center has quite a few heirloom varieties listed. Plus plenty of information on growing them.

I live in Iowa and would like to grow sweet potatoes this year for the first time. Can someone please give me the names of several good sweet potatoes for me to get. I would like to order from Sand Hill Preservation Center. Thanks for any suggestions you have.

Jeanne,
If you ever grow them come back and tell us how they did. I'm another Iowan who wants to try. I know my Dad planted them when he was a kid, but types change and I don't know what ''name'' they planted.

Sally,
I will let you know if I get some sweet potatoes and how they do. I plan on planting some regular potatoes on Good Friday. I haven't bought them yet so am not sure which kind I will plant. I would like to try a couple different ones. I have grown potatoes before and had fairly good success. This year I would like to put them in some large cattle lick tubs or 5 gal buckets with holes in the bottom.

Jeanne,
This year I'm growing Yukon Gold for the first time and one called Canela Russet. I've grown russets before, just not this one.
I know a guy in town who was going to build raised beds and try sweet potatoes. I'll have to see if he actually does.
Tubs sure would be a nice way to harvest them. Digging comes with the risk of stabbing, but you just eat those first.
