I can't believe spring is around the corner. What spring bulbs are you looking forward to seeing bloom this year?

The Dutch irises and muscari have had leaves above ground for months here in GA. Also, thanks to our confusing weather and a lot or rain, the daffodils and tulips are also putting up leaves, and some hyacinths are blooming.

Anyone else seeing their bulbs sprouting earlier than normal?

Annette I'm looking forward to seeing blooms on anything that I planted this year and anything that I didn't see last year. It's my first yr with tulips, muscari, crocus, dutch iris, hyacinths and also my first year forcing so it's a good time for me.
Nothing blooming, but my Avalanche and Golden Bells daffs are showing great foliage. I sure would like to see my Sun Disc and Minnow daffs bloom from last yr.
So nothing more to report yet!

Kabby, your garden is going to be beautiful this spring, with the variety of bulbs that you've planted! I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures.

I believe this is the normal time of year for Cyclamen coum to bloom here; they tried last year only to be blasted with sub zero temps just as the first blooms opened, but this winter I get to see the sweet little blooms!


Crocus sieberi 'Firefly' is always early, but has never started blooming quite this early.



Rijnveld's Early Sensation has a single bloom open- I've seen them show color as early as Christmas before.



A single Jan Bos hyacinth is showing color- the earliest I've ever had a hyacinth blooming.

Neal I know you are delighted with seeing those tiny faces shining, I'll live vicariously through everyone else until I have something to report. Annette now YOUR gardens are going to be awesome!
So I will slide outside into this cold weather and "almost" finish my bulb planting.

Umm no. I can handle cold but not wind with cold. So I'll stay right here with this big dog keeping me warm. Then maybe I'll let the golden retriever up here with me.

I had a couple of Rijnveld's Early Sensation bloom already. However, I am getting very nervous about what I will see when all my daffs begin blooming. We had so much warm weather and now it is somewhat cold. But those of you who live in the deep south know how it is - warm to hot one day and cool the next then back to hot.

gemini_sage - Is your Jan Bos hyacinth pink and not red or is that a trick of the camera? Mine are this horrid reddish color. I am going to move them when they have bloomed. Preferably where I can't see them when I first go outside.

Its normally more reddish- hot pink. I thought it looked lighter because of the weird bloom time, but come to think of it, it might be Pink Pearl. I have some of those in that bed too.

Beautiful blooms Neal! I especially love your cyclamen! Except for the Hyacinth Fondant, there are no other bulbs blooming here. And, you're futher north than I am, and I have no crocuses blooming yet.

Next year if I order hyacinths, they'll be getting planted as late as possible in the fall. I've not seen a hyacinth color that I didn't like.

The Fondant blooming this early has messed up the flow of pink blooms I was trying to create under the weeping Kwanzan Cherry trees, where the pink tulips were planted.

gemini_sage I don't believe that is Pink Pearl. PP is really sort of a pearly pink like the name says. I do believe that one in the photo is Jan Bos. I wish mine would look like that instead of that horrid color I have.

They both came from Van Engelen, and they describe Pink Pearl as "fuchsia pink with paler edges", which doesn't quite match the name does it? Curiosity just got me looking through photos from last spring, and I found it! It is one they sold as Pink Pearl, and Jan Bos in the background.


I can see they open paler pink and age to almost hot pink. The one with the cruddy bloom in the pic is the one blooming, which now looks cruddy again since we've been having temps in the teens. I appears it tried to bloom too early last year too.

After seeing your N. Candy Princess pics, I'm thinking about getting a few this fall. Beautiful!

The only bulbs I have blooming are the snowdrops that have been blooming, since December. I'll have to wait til the snow melts to see what else is coming up.

Marilyn, N. Candy Princess is a beautiful spring bulb, I got them on sale from Van Engelen last year, and planted them in late December of 2014. They would be a wonderful addition to your garden.

It's interesting that my snow drops are not blooming yet in 7a, and yours are in 6a !

I spent several hours in the garden today, fertilizing my peonies, and the emerging bulb foliage. I was happy to see my Tulip Kingsblood is returning.

In my spring bulb garden (in the front of my house where it gets sun half the day) I have allium, various large-cup daffodils and muscari. The muscari foliage never went away. . it's amusing to see it frost-covered in the mornings! There are only ~5 of the others that have peeked above the soil. . . .and then stopped!

However. . . in my side garden (which gets sun all day), there are a dozen or so King Alfred Improved daffodils that have emerged and are growing! No sign yet of the crocuses or of the hyacinth. enough of the buds on my daphne have bloomed, filling the air near it with that heavenly fragrance. Since this flower bed is predominantly for my hellebores (lenten/christmas roses), I EXPECT to see them bloom in winter. This year so far, my Josef Lemper put out its first white bloom. . in October. In the week after Christmas, Sunshine Ruffles and Ice Follies both bloomed . Four others are expected to bloom for their first time sometime between mid-Feb and mid-March. The last 3 are too young to bloom until NEXT winter.

I have a love/hate relationship with muscari that have autumn foliage. On one hand I like seeing exactly where they are in fall when I'm planting other bulbs, but on the other hand the leaves often look ratty by the time spring rolls around and they bloom. I started growing some M. aucheri a couple of years ago (Ocean Magic and Sky Blue) and hope they increase and naturalize as easily as M. armeniacum cultivars. M. aucheri doesn't have the autumn foliage and has a neater appearance in the garden. Having said that, I wouldn't be without Valerie Finnis- I love that color so much it's worth having the fall foliage

I see buds on Dutch Master (often sold as "improved King Alfred") that are about 4" tall. Hope they make it!

Beautiful hellebore BetNC! I'm just starting to get blooms on some of my plants.

Strangely enough, the muscari foliage dose not bother me. Sometimes, the foliage gets eaten by some critter, I wonder if it's a rabbit. Here are some really long leaves from muscari I have planted in a pot.

Muscari foliage only bugs me after it has been exposed to a lot of cold and gets shabby looking. It looks good in your container Annette, does it get cold enough there to damage the leaves?
