I have a brick wall that I would like to hang a trellis from (via screwing in eye-hooks) for the purpose of growing melons. My initial thought was to use wire fencing/lattice but I thought that the tendency for it to rust might end up damaging the plant (?). The wooden trellises I've used in the past are not only quite a bit more expensive, but also rot rather quickly.

Any thoughts from those who've been successful with melons before is appreciated.

Thanks.

I always grow my melons vertically, on metal fencing, although mine is anchored with T-posts in the middle of the row in the garden. You should be fine with one caveat, any melons growing behind the fencing, if it is close to the wall, may get stuck.

As long as you're using regular fencing material it shouldn't rust. Rust won't really hurt the plants, but it's not the best having to reach into for harvesting.

I also use slings made from strips cut from old t-shirts to hold melons as they grow.

yes, i thought there would be an issue with any fruit growing on the back side of the trellis. was thinking of trying to spot them early and pruning them off. dunno if that's advised or not.

I don't have trellises here, but I remember in the Philippines they use bamboo for their veggie climbers for their trellis.
