Thread OP

Hello,

I'm new to this site and not really sure how it works. Apologize if I'm placing this in the wrong area. Anyways, they have this plant at work and I like it. I have a leaf that I'm trying to root in water but since I don't know what it is I can't look it up. Anyone know what this plant is? Thanks! And any advice on how to use this site would be grateful.

Hi & welcome!

Looks like a ZZ plant, Zamioculas zamiifolia:
ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

It's known to take root from individual leaves (the whole compound leaf.)

What are you stuck trying to do on here? You've got the forum part down, good post! You could add a bit more info to your profile, by clicking this icon:

Welcome! risichris!

Sorry, I do not know your plant. But someone will! No worries on posting in the wrong place. If something is in the wrong place one of the admins will move it to the right forum. We do have a Plant ID forum. So this might get moved there.

As for navigating the site, this is how I do it. I go thru the list of forums that interest me. In the top right corner of each forum's home page is a spot where you can click "watch this forum". When you do, your personal homepage will display that forum and indicate when new activity has happened.

You can also click to watch a specific thread. That is in the top left or bottom right. You will only get an message on your home page if there is new activity on that thread, it won't just be listed like the forums.

Also, if you could go to your public profile and add your location that is always helpful so people know where you are when asking questions. You do that in the top left right under the "All Things Plants" title. There is a little icon that looks like a person. click on that and then in the middle very top it says "change your public profile". Don't forget to save your changes at the bottom.

The best way to learn about the site is just hop around. You'll get the hang of it.

Again Welcome!

I agree looks like a ZZ. I have one-be careful not to overwater it, they hate being soggy!

Welcome to ATP. Yep, looks like a ZZ.

When you have time you can go to your page (the icon of a person) and click on "Change your site preferences".

You can set the way you want to see some things, click 'yes' to be notified when you receive an ATP email (we call them Tree-mail), click 'yes' for the weekly newsletter, click 'yes' to automatically watch threads that you start, you can select how many posts (from 20 up to 400)will appear on the page, and many other choices. Don't forget to click on "Save your changes".

Not specific to your plant but I keep this link handy when I need to remind myself how to propagate plants. http://extension.missouri.edu/...

Don't try to root the leaf in water. If you take an entire leaf, let it callous over/dry, stick it in some damp potting medium and wait, it will make a new plant. If you use Google Images with the keywords "propagate zz plant leaf" you will find several images of successful propagation by this method. Keep in mind that most of the activity of this plant occurs underground for the first year or two...it will be a long time so be patient.
