Experimenting to see which method works best here in Coastal NC for annuals and Perennials or maybe by type we shall see. So I started daylilies 'Set the Style' 1-18-16 inside a recycled milk jug with potting mix and I also started the same seeds using the recycled milk jug with potting mix and set them outside. I also sowed on 1-18-16 Impatiens balsimina the same way to see which way produces the better starts. Both were seeds I received from trades on the Gardenweb. It has been 5 days and no signs of germination inside as 1-23-16. I am hopeful and excited at the possibilities of having some lovely seedlings, and plants soon. I need more milk jugs for seed starting. :)

You are doing the Impatiens outdoors in jugs? Can they handle being started this early in your zone?

Impatiens balsamina wintersow EXTREMELY well. I wintersowed them initially, now they volunteer like weeds. I love them, but I end up culling more than I can keep.

Generally any seeds that reseed naturally wintersow well.

Welcome, Kim.

I agree with Karen, I had tremendous success with Impatiens balsamina wintersown. The added bonus is that you don't have to harden off the plants before planting them.

I don't know David, that is why I am trying them outside and in, I hope so, it was 70 here today, the ones inside have now sprouted so we shall see which ones fair better. But now that I have seen what everyone on here is able to accomplish with winter sowing outside I am willing to give it a try and see what happens. It just seems like it is alot less hassle though I do love seeing the seedlings pop up inside. My Impatiens are up yeah!
