I'm looking for seed or rooted cuttings since it appears seed is hard to come by. Does anyone know of a good source? TIA

There does seem some confusion about what Mexican oregano is since the plant can vary from region to region. And this type (Lippia) seems (from what I'm reading) to be THE type. I've also read that it's hard to find seeds. I dunno. I do see this plant for sale at Companion Plants in OH. I've ordered neat stuff from them several years ago like patchouli plants. Their location is good for me, maybe not so good for you although you'd have better luck finding it out there on the west coast. I'm always skeptical when it comes to oregano - like growing beautiful plants from seed only to find that they taste nothing like the oregano used in Italian cooking.

There's a good herb nursery in Vista, Ca called Pearson's and I orignally got my poliomintha from them........I had a friend recently move up this way and had I thought of it, I should have asked her to bring on up....

Okay, now I need to go back and double check lippia against poliomintha....

yep...entirely different plants...when I was first looking for Mexican Oregano, I made sure to look for poliomintha and not lippia. You want yours for cooking?

Yep - for cooking. I had bought some dried "Mexican oregano" at my local bulk bin store and I really like to add it to rice along with Sazon. Do you think Lippia is the wrong thing? See - now it's good that you piggy-backed.

When I was looking for Ambrosia, before...I somehow bought an Ambrosia plant...not the chenopodium that I was looking for, ended up with the 'Ambrosia' used in Mexican cooking that tastes like creosote....LOL..I'm really not sure why anyone would use it, but I do love cilantro and apparently there are those who think cilantro tastes like creosote...go figure....

Maybe I should get one each of Lippia and Poliomintha (why is it named that??? Sounds scary!).
Brings up another question and maybe I need to start a new thread. Looking for a real oregano - like the kind you put on pizza and in spaghetti sauce. Hard to pin down the species. I'm going to get Greek oregano as well because I like the sharper flavor when I cook Greek food.

Thanks, Jean...yep, that's it and I know I can order it online, but sure would prefer trading for seeds rather than paying $15 plus shipping for a plant....when you're growing a lot of plants, that adds up AWFULLY fast. I have so far wintersown 10 bins full of at least 7 pots each for plants...if I were buying them for $15 each plus shipping and handling, we would not be eating this month...LOL...actually, each pot has 2-3 seeds, so we would not be eating for longer than a month.....and I have a lot more seeds to sow.

I'm also looking for Lippia graveolens seeds....in my zone 6 I know it is an annual...but am having a difficult time trying to locate seeds OR plants! hope someone can help.....

Tilth - if it's any help, I grow mine in a pot since I know it won't survive winter here. I bring it indoors in the winter.

Why your thread caught my attention was I have been looking for Poliomintha longiflora. It is called Mexican oregano. I watch for it with the Hispanic vendors at the flea markets. I've also looked for seed. It is supposed to do well in Texas.

I was wondering if you had found any seeds in the "dried "Mexican oregano" at my local bulk bin store". Sometimes organic and not treated so seeds might germinate.

Did anyone ever find a source for just Lippia graveolens seeds and not the plant? I've been looking for this for my grandmother and can't seem to find seeds anywhere. Judging by this thread it seems to be a fairly common problem. I did check out the companion plants, and they still do have the plant. I guess if worse comes to worst, that the route I'll go.

I see obscure sources for seed online and some references to the TX native plant database. Studies in Mexico on photochemopreventive effects as well as other herbal remedies. My potted plant produced some round spiky seeds (?) after blooming but I couldn't find the time to collect and experiment. Don't know anything about dormancy or germination though.
