There has been a change in the database for S. 'State Fair'. We definitely have an incorrect plant under this name. It has been circulating for many decades.

This is what is being sold in the U.S., but please note, this is an incorrect plant.

This is what it should look like.

Obviously a very different plant.

I will have to find a place to use this wonderful fuzzy NOID in my containers or a border planting. I so love it.

No chance of mixing them up by description and photo. Sighing!

thank you to have this corrected!

The 'State Fair' we have in Germany look like this:

April 6. 2015:
Thumb of 2016-01-27/turini/07f9f1

July 24. 2015:
Thumb of 2016-01-27/turini/24a7c2

August 22. 2014:
Thumb of 2016-01-27/turini/722449

Sometimes it is pure grey, hardly any other color

That is beautiful Wolfgang.

Please feel free to question any of the entries is you see something that does not appear to be correct. It is good that we can all work together.

Good morning Jesse.
@JungleShadows
Kevin, how should we handle this. Many years ago I bought 'State Fair' and it was this one. It went through the most amazing color changes which made the name seem appropriate, at least to me.

Is there a way to handle this wonderful semp here in the U.S.?

Also wanting to know this, as I'm creating my list and noting that it looks like the one Lynne is mentioning is in fact a NOID, and not a "state fair."

Maybe we could do "Tufted State Fair" to designate this American clone. Think I got this one too but never used it in crosses. It is a pretty thing.

I would add this one back to my collection and use it if we could come up with a solution.

I hate to play devil's advocate, but isn't it possible two plants across the world were given the same name legitimately, but without cross referencing with one another? I imagine before the Internet this would have been an easy mistake to make. We could list them as 'State Fair' (US Source) and 'State Fair' (German Source), use a "from" reference like we do with some species, or tack on "Tufted" to the name as Kevin suggests. Just some ideas.

I understand what you are saying Sol, but both here in the U.S. and Europe this semp is credited with the same hybridizer, David T. Ford ( GB ), 1981.
So it is not a case of two hybridizers using the same name for there new semp.
Howard Wills knows this semp and verifies that it is the one that we now show in our database. Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'State Fair')
http://sempervivum-liste.de/Se...

I do like the idea of giving the fuzzy, highly colored one a different designation of 'Tufted State Fair'. I grew this one for quite a few years before discovering it was not the correct 'State Fair'.

Makes sense Lynn, that complexion does merit a name change or NoID status. 'Tufted State Fair' does sound cool, you could make a note of the reasoning behind the name on the database entry.

That is puzzling. Our State Fair was in our original collection that we purchased in 1995 from a couple by the name of Russ. They were collectors/sellers out near Redding. Same source for the Red Purple and Prilly's Lynn was asking about in another thread.

Annie, I think my 'State Fair' was purchased from SMG many years ago. Same as yours. It has been around for decades.
Wondering if maybe Kevin's idea of 'Tufted State Fair' might work. Could you talk to Kevin and see what he thinks?
I don't know what to say about Red Purple and Prilly's?
Did any notes come with the collection? Spreadsheets?

It'd be interesting to know if it was sold to SMG with the same hybridizer info as we had for it on the forum, or if that was added later.
