I tried to 'upload an image' with an .mp4 file which didn't work. Do I instead copy and paste that file into a post? Or....?

I don't have video capabilities on ATP and almost surely never will.

What you can do, though, is upload the video to youtube and share it here.

To upload one to ATP means that our servers are then hosting (holding, then showing) that video. If we started doing that, we'd be in for massive hardware upgrades Green Grin! That's why we don't plan on doing it, especially when there are cloud services who do that so well.

Deb, if you want to send me the video I can upload it to YouTube if you like .. I have an account. If you can FTP (File transfer) you can dump it in a file on my web page or attach it in an email.

Perhaps if you post the question again in the Ask A Question forum members will help you through the process. I know that @glengarry23 creates lots of youtube videos, really beautiful pictures with enjoyable music; perhaps he or some others will jump in to offer instructions.(?)

If you already have a Google account, you can upload videos to Google Photos/Picasa Web Albums and share the link. I've been backing up all my photos and videos there because it is now free unlimited storage for photos up to 16megapixels and videos up to 1080p. You can share a link or directly embed photos from there, but I haven't figured out how to embed the videos stored there yet. Google also owns You-tube I think and you can embed You-tube videos easily, so that all gets a little confusing. Confused I think also that people with Amazon Prime get cloud storage included, but I don't know what that can do as far as sharing.

I put up a few videos on You-tube to try it a while ago, and it wasn't too bad. Not as simple as sharing pictures from my Google account, but doable. I think I'm the only one that ever looked at them though!
Here is one I have on You-tube embedded using the bb code tag, hopefully it works!

At the link below are all the tags we can use here on ATP. Towards the bottom of the list it shows the tags to use for You-tube. You just type the tags in your post as shown there, replacing "Youtube ID" with the ID for the video you want. For example the address for that video I posted is below. The "v=" part at the end gives the video id, so you would put xUJiD2umYhQ in between the opening and closing tags. That displays the You-tube player embedded in the post with that video already loaded.

Shape - You need to post that video on your thread:

I just came upon this Thread tonight,..thank you Greene for mentioning me Thumbs up .

I do paste the link to my Videos rather than Embed them,..though ATP has the facilities to Embed i never do so as it causes all kinds of problems for ATP,..as Trish mentioned the Host Server then has to hold the Embed,..this also causes much slower loading of that Thread,.. when several Embeds are there eventually the Embeds effect the entire Site,..i would recommend uploading to YouTube as it is a simple enough process though it looks daunting when first starting.

There are many sites one can upload a video to,..one such site is Vimeo,..perhaps easier to understand the uploading Thumbs up

If the video is a short one then there is Photobucket,..one can copy the link and paste it in ATP.

Something that should be remembered is that in ATP the link must be in BB Code,..not in HTML Code,..sites vary as to which Code is acceptable,..so if you want to copy the BB Code you will need to download CoLT,..as typed,..its a small Add On to your Browser,..once downloaded you never see it pop up again,..CoLT enables you to Right Click on ANY Thumbnail Video in YouTube to select the BB Code then paste it here in ATP.

If you want you can introduce the video your way like this Video===Looking Back At Blooms 2015,..Part One

@glengarry23
I don't know if embedding the video player actually has any impact on the ATP server. I think it just loads the player by showing a You-tube web address in an iframe. I think Dave was referring to actually uploading a video to be stored on and played from the ATP server. I can see how having a bunch of the You-tube players on one page can slow down the loading of the page though, depending on how much data gets pre-loaded before you actually hit play on the video. Kind of like how sites can get bogged down by slow response times from servers hosting ads that they display.

Either way posting links is simpler, and that CoLT add-on looks pretty handy. I love stuff like that, especially when it is customizable. I wish it was available for Opera or Chrome, since I don't use Firefox much. I don't take a whole lot of videos, but wanted to try out the different options here. I know some site owners add the ability to do the video embeds to keep people on their site. Sometimes when people go over to You-tube it is like falling down the rabbit hole, with all the suggested videos and autoplaying. I always find it amusing what You-tube recommends you watch next. When my video of the moths mating ends, up pops a picture of a dog's vulva for a suggested video of dogs mating!

Thanks for the comments on my You-tube videos! I just put them up there to test it out, and haven't really looked at it since then. I take very few videos compared to pictures, but I should practice it more. My old camera only did 640x480 videos, so when I got a new one that did 1080p, it was a big step up. I've found it can be useful for birding, because I can record their movements and calls which is sometimes helpful for ids. Also at that resolution, taking a still shot from a video frame can be helpful for ids too. The camera also does high speed video of 120 frames per second in hd, or 240fps in vga. I had visions of using it to capture a hummingbird's flight, but haven't been able to use it successfully yet.

Forgot to say too that I watched the video @Shape put up and that is some amazing work you have done! I have bookmarked @glengarry23 's channel too for viewing.

Also, if anyone else is interested in sharing or embedding their videos on Google I did figure a few things out. It looks like you can only share collections or albums with a link directly from the Google Photos site, and they don't give you any embedding code for individual pictures at that site. But you can go to Google Drive and have it set to show your Google Photos pictures there also. From Google Drive you can set the sharing properties and get the sharing link for individual photos and videos. In the menu when you have the individual item open there is an option to get the embed code (it is the html embed code). I tried it and it does work, but you can't do html embeds here though. I tried the video id it generated with the bbcode for google videos here and it doesn't work. The url it loads using the bbcode here gives a 404 error, so it may be using a url google doesn't use anymore for playing videos? So it is probably simpler to just share the link for Google hosted videos here.

I know a ton of people use their Android phones as cameras, and have them set to automatically backup their pics and videos to their Google accounts online. For them, being able to share things directly from their Google accounts would probably be the simplest. It is too bad Google keeps changing things and making it difficult to keep up.

FYI you can still get embedding code with sizing and display options for photos by looking at them through their older Picasa Web Albums site. They aren't updating it anymore Grumbling , but it is better than the Google Photos site in many ways which is why they haven't taken it down. So you can view and work with your Google hosted photos on at least three of their online services each with its owns pros and cons. That is one reason I am surprised that when I go to You-tube I don't see the option to work with my already online Google hosted videos there....since they own You-tube too. Confused See what I mean about them making it difficult to keep up! Glare

Sorry @Bonehead for taking this so far afield from your original post!

No problemo. I am only barely skimming through all this techno-babble -- I can barely figure out how to view a video on my camera, let alone venture into the youtube world. And I don't use Google for much of anything (well, that I know of...). But, more power to those of you who understand this stuff. Carry on!
