Acorn Acorn Acorn DAYLILY TALES ~ 2016 Acorn Acorn Acorn

Juli is joining with Char to bring back…. DAYLILY TALES, a Fun Writing Contest for Daylily Lovers!

The contest is open to ALL ATP MEMBERS. All you have to do is ENTER for a chance to WIN!

There will be THREE winners, chosen by YOUR votes!

FIRST PLACE: 150 ACORNS !
SECOND PLACE: 100 ACORNS !
THIRD PLACE: 50 ACORNS !

Contest Description:
Write a short story using the names of daylilies found in the ATP database or the AHS database as the primary text of your story. (Please keep in mind that ATP is a family oriented site.)

Here are the rules:

• Each person is allowed to submit ONE story. Your story should be approximately 150 to 500 words.
• Our theme is “Valentines” Stories could be about going on dates, forgotten anniversaries, a couples cruise, blind dates, getting engaged, Valentine’s Day party, a love story…. I keep picturing Lady and the Tramp with the spaghetti Whistling …..be creative!
• Use the registered names of daylilies to tell your story. Daylily names must be found in the ATP or AHS database. Please do not attach images or link images from the database.
• Use all capital letters for the names of the daylilies within the text of your story. Submit a list and count of all the daylily names you used at the end of your story. The name count will be used in case of a tie for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
• Make sure your story has a title for people to use when voting.
• Your story must be submitted in secret by Tree-mail to Char or daylily no later than 9:00 pm Eastern time February 12th 2016.
Until voting is over -- please keep secret which story you wrote!

Here is how the stories will be posted and you will vote for the winner:

• Your story will be copied and pasted from your entry Tmail just as you wrote it (with no editing) and posted to a separate Contest Story thread, on February 14th 2016. The stories will be posted anonymously by Char.
• After the stories are finished being posted, ALL ATP MEMBERS are invited to vote. To vote send a tree-mail to Char or daylily listing your favorite stories by their titles in order for First, Second and Third place. .
Voting will close at 9:00pm Eastern time on February 19th 2016. Votes will be counted and the winners announced on February 21st 2016.

• The story with the most votes will be the winner. In case of a tie for any of the three placings, the story that uses the most daylily names will break the tie. Only daylily names in capital letters and listed will be counted, check your names carefully - for instance “IF” is a daylily name! However, if you use the same daylily name multiple times in your story, it will only count once in a tiebreaker. NOTE - Some daylily names can have a name within a name for example ‘Malaysia’ is in ‘Malaysian Spice’. If you use ‘Malaysian Spice’ and not ‘Malaysia’ separately, ‘Malaysia’ does not count in your word count.

To verify the names you are using and to help you find names to use in your story....

To get you started and show how the stories are written here is the winner of our previous Daylily Tales Contest titled “Free Bird”.

FREE BIRD written by Blue23Rose (Vickie)

Ever since she could REMEMBER, little BECKY LYNN the EAGLE was told she was born on a very SPECIAL DAY. But she didn’t really understand what was so MARVELOUS about the FOURTH OF JULY.

Her UNCLE BRYAN told her a FANCY TALE about FIREWORKS and the big CELEBRATION held every year on the FOURTH OF JULY. But he knew that PAUL the BLUEBIRD would know SOMETHING more about it. So she took FLIGHT to have a little BIRD TALK with PAUL.

PAUL the BLUEBIRD was SO PRETTY and BRIGHT, he was EASY AS PIE to TRACK DOWN. She asked, “Can you tell me why we CELEBRATE the FOURTH OF JULY?” He said “WITH PLEASURE! And I KNOW my ancestors were there to help out!”

“Now here’s the INSIDE STORY”, he said. “Back in the 1700’s there were some people that decided to create their own government here in AMERICA. They were very tired of taxation without representation from the BRITISH EMPIRE, so THIRTEEN COLONIES united together to claim their INDEPENDENCE.

There was a man named Patrick Henry who gave a speech during this time. My GRANDMOTHER (with many ‘greats’) was perched upon the windowsill while MISTER Henry was talking. Oh, he was RAMBLING ON about what all they needed to do to become FREE AT LAST from the British. As CAPTIVATING as his speech was, my GRANDMOTHER just knew he had to have a FANTASTIC ending to get the men to TAKE CHARGE of the situation. So she flew into the room and created a GENTLE BREEZE to get MISTER Henry’s ATTENTION. With the tips of her WINGS she fluttered SIGN LANGUAGE to SIGNAL a few choice words. After she had signed “GIVE ME LIBERTY”, MISTER Henry knew what to say to wrap up his speech. He PUFFED UP his chest, and looking at each AMERICAN PATRIOT in the room, he said “I know not what course others may take; but as for me, GIVE ME LIBERTY or give me death!” Now the men were ALL FIRED UP and ready to start a REVOLUTION. And my GRANDMOTHER was ECSTATIC that she had helped with MISTER Henry’s speech.

Now even though the declaration of INDEPENDENCE was signed on the FOURTH OF JULY 1776, it was a long, hard fight. The war became known as the AMERICAN REVOLUTION, and it wasn’t until 1783 when the Treaty of PARIS was signed that INDEPENDENCE was finally won. Unfortunately, by the time it was over, BOTH SIDES NOW had lost many lives. But because of THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE of all those brave men and women, we CELEBRATE THE DAY known as INDEPENDENCE DAY.

BECKY LYNN was BEGINNING to understand how important the FOURTH OF JULY was. She felt BETTER THAN ever about her birthday. “THANK YOU!”, she said. “You are a good STORY TELLER and if you know any more stories, I would love to hear them”. PAUL said, “ANYTIME, COME AGAIN sometime and I’ll tell you all about the BOSTON TEA PARTY”.

Congratulations Vickie, Larry and Dennis!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed each story. They were each so different from one another. It was difficult to choose between them.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown

Thanks everyone and congratulations Larry and Dennis! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your stories I tip my hat to you. You guys have wonderful imaginations.

I think the Daylily Tales is so much fun. I really enjoyed putting together a Valentines story. After I found that there were daylilies named Victor and Margaret, my parents names, the story kind of wrote itself.
