Not sure if this is the correct forum or where I should ask this but I was wondering if anyone is familiar with Song of India (Dracaena reflexa) plants? Is that database entry a "General" entry? I'm curious because I always thought that D. reflexa was the green form with no leaf variegation and the photos at that entry are all variegated varieties and the data says Unusual foliage color. I know there are a few varieties with leaf margins of cream to yellow and we do have entries for different variegated cultivars:
Song of India (Dracaena reflexa 'Variegata')
Song of India (Dracaena reflexa var. reflexa)
Song of India (Dracaena reflexa 'Song of Jamaica')
Dracaena reflexa 'Riki' (I'm wondering if this is actually species reflexa, I could only find references for D. Riki and D. Rikki) one listing it as D. massangeana Rikki.

Dracaena reflexa used to be included in the genus, Pleomele so maybe confusion ensued when it was changed. I haven't seen a green Dracaena reflexa (Pleomele) in a long time but I know there used to be a solid green form out there so I'm just wondering if that database entry is for all D. reflexa, whether green or variegated foliage?

I haven't been able to find too much information when googling but did find the following, although I don't know how correct any of it is.

Hi Lin, I haven't read all of those links, and I'm definitely no plant expert. What I've always thought is that Dracaena reflexa was the main species name, and that it represented the green form. I have always assumed that Song of India was a cultivar name representing the yellow and green form I have. I don't find Song of India anywhere in the Catalogue of life. I do see it listed in various places as Dracaena reflexa 'song of India'.
I wondered about the way it is listed in our database. I hope someone with more knowledge can sort this out.

The Catalogue of Life does not list cultivars.

The Dracaena reflexa entry covers the entire species. If plants of the reflexa species can be variegated, the photos showing variegation do belong in that entry.

Zuzu, I'm very confused by our database. Why is it when I search "Dracaena reflexa' I find nothing. Search 'song of india' and I come up with it. Isn't there something wrong or am I just really confused?

Thanks zuzu ... that's what I was wondering, if that entry was the general entry for all in the species!

@plantmmanager Karen, when I type in the name Dracaena reflexa in the search box I get all in that species of D. reflexa:

Is it possible that you misspelled the name, Karen? You should be getting the results Lin shows in her link.

When I type in the search box Song of India this is what I get: http://garden.org/plants/searc... = Everything that has Song of India in it's name.

I think for Dracaena, Song of India is a "Common name" rather than a cultivar name. It is a cultivar name for both a Daylily and an Iris.

Maybe I did mis-type the name. I'm not certain now. What I don't understand is why "Song of India" comes first? Why not Dracaena reflexa 'song of india'?

You're right, Lin. Song of India is one of the common names of Dracaena reflexa.

Karen, the common name is listed first, then the genus and species, and then the cultivar name in single quotes. Song of India is not a cultivar name.

Why is it when I search "Song of India" in the cat of life, I get no search results? I'm really trying to understand this.

Karen, the CoL does not deal with common names, only Genus and Species.

edited to add: They also do not deal with or list cultivar names.

Ok, I see now where the cat of life is coming from. Should our database have common names listed first? I'll have to look around at some other entries.

I see that is how our database is organized. I guess I hadn't realized that. Sorry for all the trouble!

Karen, it's no trouble at all. As for myself, I've been having a week of confusion with general entries for a couple of plants in the database .... but sometimes it doesn't take much to confuse me. Green Grin!
