I just bought a Watermelon Peperomia and a varigated Peperomia obtusifolia, its been ages since I've had one but I really do enjoy them. Is anyone else here growing any Peperomias? What do you find works for you?

I am growing 2 varieties and I love them, I am very careful with my watering, I keep them slightly moist but never wet and they get bright light never direct sun. Thats what works for me

I have the variegated one int he window now so maybe I'll move it back a bit so the light isn't direct. Do they make the flowers for you in the indirect light?

Steven, I havent gotten flowers yet, maybe someone will advise us both what we can do to produce flowers

I've killed everyone I've ever purchased. Have no clue what I do wrong with them. They are indeed beautiful plants.

I've read that they like it humid, and prefer to be watered from below.

Those look really healthy Christine! The variegated one on the left is the same as the one I have and I got the watermaelon one too Hopefully they grow well!

Thanks Steven, I got them both as clippings from 2 different friends and as I took a good look at them I realized how dusty they are over the weekend I will be cleaning all my house plants!!!!

Its amazing how dirty those larger leaved houseplants can get! I had to wash mine off as well when I brought them home and just washed off the stephanotis this morning....the dust really collects fast!

I have the darker green one on the right and it has taken a ton of abuse and is still going strong! In fact, it grows so much, I have taken cuttings and started over with it so many times, lol!

This discussion has been languishing for a while, but seems like a perfect spot for some pics instead of starting a new one. Hope nobody minds. I just realized I have 5 Peperomias. They are wildly different!

I didn't realize until recently how huge this genus is and actually thought I had 4 until "my list" reminded me about the last one. How are the Peps doing mentioned above?

I have two myself. Actualy they belong to my wife. Both nicely colored and doing well. I have killed them before with too much water. Now I back off and water only once in a great while. So far so good. Have them for 9 months. If I make it past winter, then I can have some bragging rights.

This plant is one that has a lucky spot right in a windowsill. It's grown a lot over the winter.


The purple P. caperata I pictured above is/was outside in a mini garden. I *think* it's still alive, but not totally sure. It may just be a slow-die'er.

How are those Peps doing out there?

Is this in the right family? If it is then I grow them very similar to Christine.

I am not great with knowing what is what, I just do what feels right. It didn't seem to like it when I took the very top leaf bud off, it took it awhile to spread. Mine has never bloomed in the year or so I have had it.

Leda, definitely a Peperomia. Looks like my P. clusiifolia. It might get redder/pinker edges if more light is possible for it this summer. Looks robust though, nice!! Mine bloomed right after I brought it inside for winter. More sun might help your plant with that, though the blooms aren't exciting to anyone except a real plant geek, as folks yakking here tend to be. You've probably seen pics and already know that... But most plant people like the fact that their plant is healthy/happy enough to bloom, even if the bloom just looks like a soft stick. Giving it a prune may have caused it to not be ready yet, but you DO have a ton of pretty leaves. Looks like doing that was a good idea..

I think I am a bit late to add to this conversation, but I wanted to add some information from personal experience with growing a P. caperata (I doubt the care of other species is much different).

They don't grow a vast root system like a number of houseplants, so potting in a larger pot is rarely necessary.

They enjoy bright, indirect sun, but I believe morning sun is okay (especially for the variegated varieties, if they don't receive enough light, they will lose their variegation over time). Mine does receive a little bit of midday sun from a South window, but during the summer, I wouldn't advise that at all (especially in my zone... I'm in zone 8). I read on another forum of a lady who grew hers in a West window year-round (but I believe she is from zone 5?). I know West would be too harsh for them in my zone.

With respects to watering, they don't like to "stay moist," but prefer to dry out a bit between waterings (not completely, but don't try to keep the soil moist at all times either.. somewhere in the middle if that makes sense).

I picked up a Peperomia the other day that was grown by Exotic Angel. I have had the hardest time finding the exact "species" online, as none of EA's plants match, haha. I think it's P. pecuniifolia (even then, I only found but a couple pictures online when I typed this in). Cute little plant.
