I bet it's a Louisiana iris as they have the truest reds in the iris world.

Red Echo has the dark centers

as does Red Dazzler

Very unfortunately our database lacks photos of more than a handful of the LA's out there.

I think it looks closest to Red Echo, but the google pic colors may be enhanced a bit.

They are beautiful! Can anyone point me to a place that has them?

You're in SC so the LA LA vendors would be good for you too. Away from my computer right now. Will give you a few more suggestions in the a.m.

It looks like I. fulva. It could be an intentional hybrid or just a collected natural hybrid.

red I. fulva
Thumb of 2016-03-04/coboro/c2a37a

It could also be I nelsonii. Both can be very red. Nelsonii has a much smaller natural habitat.

I. nelsonii formerly known as the Abbeville Reds

Telling the two apart is not an easy thing to do.

The Society for Louisiana Iris website has a commercial directory. You might start there.

You couldn't find it at any of those sites? Surprised by that since those vendors have loads of LA's. Remember that you pic is probably redder than the iris probably really is in nature.

Do you remember what you had googled when that iris came up? That might help you locate the name too.

I don't remember exactly .. I'll see if I can find it again. I saw a few on those sites but they were more a reddish maroon.

I found it again and you're right Leslie, someone fiddled with the color. It's Iris fulva red form.

So happy you found it! It is still a really nice red red iris even if not as brilliant as the first picture. And in full sun the red will really stand out. I have a red LA, James Dickinson, and it is really lovely in the sunlight.

X, I grow red La irises, just wanted to add that the color evolves (fades) and what starts as a bright fire engine red can end up being a
Pinkish or an orangish rust depending on cultivar. I don't mind but it happens.

Thanks for the info .. I was actually wondering about that. After looking at all the sites, I see they don't start shipping until late Summer into Fall - definitely going to order some.

My James Dickinson doesn't fade, but most of my others do. They are lovely in either form in my opinion.

Bummed to see Aitken's is carrying fewer LA's this year. Mostly because two that I wanted are no longer available. On the bright side I am glad I ordered what I did last year since those aren't all available either!
