Hi all,

Three months ago I had ordered and planted brug seeds purchased on ebay, but nothing germinated.

I'm getting ready to try again with brug and datura seeds sent to me. Thanks @DavidLMO!

So I was perusing old threads and came across this post:

Thank you for the link! Apparently I should not "dome" the newly planted media because of the possibility of rot, but do need to spritz the media when it looks dry.

Okay now...I soaked 6 brug seeds to soften cork..peeled the cork and found 3 seeds. They have been planted and will hold my breath till they sprout...well, maybe not ...hope they do germinate for me!

Feb. 23, datura seeds planted.
Mar. 4, one datura sprout so far.

Mar. 4, still no brug sprouts.

Rainbow, as I think I have mentioned to you before, Brug seeds can be a pain in the .... I planted 18 seeds this year. Not one has germinated. None. My experience has been hit and miss with them. Though I do have a 7 foot plant in my basement that started there from seed 2 years ago.

If you were aluding to having a plastic dome on the tray, most of what I read says to not use them on Brug seed and I don't.

I have had much better luck with Datura. I usually get near 100 % and they germinate fast.

No brug sprouts yet...but plenty datura sprouts! I planted only two of the envelopes you gave me. I'll plant more when I pot those up.

By the way, when can I transfer the seedlings to their own pots. So far they only have two leaves each.

The Datura? I pot em up when they have 2 sets of true leaves. I went to 3 or 4 " pots and at about a foot tall move to larger pots - 5 or 6". From my experience, I have found that Datura do not seem to want or need the very larger plants that Brugs need.

The Datura can grow very quickly. The 3 types I have grown went from seed to bloom in about 5 - 6 months.

Do you know which of the Datura have germinated?

The Datura are very fertile and will make a lot of seeds. My experience has been close to every single flower makes seeds.

Will let you know which daturas I planted when I post pictures of the seedlings.

For some reason my Brug. seeds are not sprouting this year and I have always had good luck, maybe people are keeping them too long before selling.
I have best luck with Datura by throwing seed on the ground and cover them with very little soil.

Since we had gotten some rains I didn't need to water for several days so I had left the Datura seedlings alone thinking to transplant when they got a little taller. Just now checked on them...Yikes! They have grown so fast...not quite 8" tall, but already have flower buds!!

David, these are the Stramonium lilac le Fleur from seeds you sent. I planted them Feb. 23, they began sprouting Mar. 4, and here they are today, Mar. 21.

Wow, blooming from seed in a month is pretty amazing, KD. But might be a bit of a worry, though. The plants look really healthy, but they may be putting on buds already because they are stressed.

I'd get them each into a big pot double quick! And I hate to say it but I'd also take off the flower buds to encourage more root and leafy growth right now. It takes a lot of energy for a plant to make a flower, and those are very young plants!

Okay, thanks Elaine! I've got the pots...I even have a 5 gal. pot...you think putting 3 Daturas together in the 5-gal. would be too much?

Yes, they get big enough so fast, you'll wish you had only put one, I'm sure. I'm thinking you'd have to water it 2 or 3 times per day if it had 3 plants in it. Give them each their own pot.

Stramonium lilac le Fleur blooms very quickly. They also stay smaller than many Datura - very diminutive. And no need to move to a huge pot cause like I say - they stay fairly small. At least here.

3 in 5 gallon will certainly be ok.

And if you want - disbud some and let a couple flower but then remove so it does not make seed. Play around. And let some go to seed.

This Datura does not get huge. Some of the others I sent will get 3 or 4 feet or so.

@Kareoke - I planted ~ 20 seeds of 2 different types of Brugs and have Zero germination.

David, don't forget KD lives where it is warm all year 'round. Sunny, too.

Those little Daturas will grow and keep growing.

I ordered some expensive brug seeds and none of them sprouted.

I ordered some cheap brug seeds and most all of them sprouted.
Seems like Datura seeds are good to sprout too.

How long do Datura plants live?

There are Brug plants that are 20 years old or more, in Hawaii and also a famous one in Beacon Hill Park in San Francisco that's 30ft. or more tall and has been there for many years.

Here in FL they are subject to nematodes, some fungal diseases, and also the spider mites love them. If you can keep those things at bay, your Daturas and Brugs will live for years and years. They get very large, but don't mind being pruned to any size that suits your growing conditions.

On the nematode problem, the solution is to grow them in large pots, not in the native soil, unless you have a good area you can solarize first to rid the soil of the nematodes. I had one grow for about 3 years in the ground before it petered out. When I pulled it up it was thoroughly infested with root-knot nematodes.

Brugs can be a pain. I have planted some and they pop right up. Others like this year - total FAILURE.

You are in Florida Z9 so if you can get past all the bad guys, both Brugs and Datura should last a long time. I winter over my Brugs in the basement and my Datura in the garage her in Zone 5B. I do have 1 Brug I grew from seed 3 years ago and Datura from seed 1 and 2 years ago.

Brugs are pretty easy to grow from cuttings as well. I have tried a couple times, bot with 100 % success.
