How do I find a Nursery or Seed Company that carries a particular plant?

Try this:
Click on The Green Pages then enter the name of the plant in the search box over on the left in the blue area. I just tried it using the word "Hellebore" and it gave me a result.
There is probably a better way...

No, than only gets results with the search term in the name. -- so "Hellebore" gets Elizabeth Town Hellebores but "fuchsia" gets nothing. I know there are fuchsia specialists out there.

Not really. We can categorize companies and we do for many of them but not all.

Then it's really not very useful. Sorry to be honest, but I find no use in a list unless you can search what they have, or what they are about. If I know the name of the place - I probably already know what they have. Even if there were a way to search the reviews or their their general description would help. I know it's probably not possible to categorize everything - but people could add to the reviews and add info that could be searched. The categories that exist seem rather strange - there are broad categories and really narrow ones, with seemingly systematic approach. Notably missing are Seeds or Plants (starts - this one is hard to name) - or Mail-order vs onsite sales. A free-form keyword field could be added that the public and/or shop/garden owner could add to could help, and then categories could be made from these every so often.

Realizing that All Things Plants cannot expect to be all things for all people. The Fuchsia Forum should be of help to you.

No, I'm not interested in Fuchsias (at least not right now). It was just an example. I was actually looking for a place - that had Nicotiana species that I have not seen anywhere else. But I also thought I could look for other plant sources too - but was disappointed. I'll probably post a request somewhere more appropriate than this forum - still here in ATP. I think the place also has hardy Fuchsia as well though.

So the Forestfarm page - how would anyone ever find it? I don't think they would scroll through all the listings. I know them well and have placed many orders. I would assume people would find it outside of ATP and then check here to see what people said about it. But I would highly suggest you make it the other way around. Searching on location would also be useful - using a starting location and then a radius would be perfect.

If they don't have what you are looking for perhaps you can google and find other nurseries that might carry other Nicotiana species.

Maintaining a list of who sells what is much, much, MUCH easier said that done. It's not a job that I've even begun to think about attempting for ATP.

Well, OK. I really posted here for the original question - which was answered - and the answer was "It's not possible"

Even though I hate when the post goes off topic in a forum - you forced me here - I will post what I was looking for... I'm not really sure where else to post it anyway - there are so many forums!

I was searching for plants last year - probably later than this - maybe in Late April for nicotiana alata - or only-the-lonely plants. I usually plant the seeds, but it was rather late to do so. I was also looking at hardy fuchsias and some other plants. I may also have been perusing succulents... I came upon a site which had some nicotiana plants I've never seen anywhere else, or ever heard of (and I'm a botanist). I'm sure it was not Annies. I did look at Annies Annuals and Perennials at the time though. I also remember Earthworks coming up too. The site was not like a catalog, but more blog-like and artistic, but you could order plants. They had lots listed (though these were entries not with photos not just a list), but some where not in production at the time. There were large photos of the plants on the site, and the plants were not just in a list, or that orderly. Well, stupid me I did not bookmark it and I must have deleted my history (I know I had an issue with my browser, and probably did this make it work better - it does but it's probably the updates not what I did). I did 'Google it'. For the life of me I don't know why people would suggest this - it's so obvious, it's like telling people not to fall, or to look where you are going. But search terms for Google or another search engine could get you (or me there) as I must have got there somehow. I vaguely remember a site I visited with a list of nurseries that may have lead me to this site (I've tried this too recently and got nowhere). Oh - and I think it was in the Pacific Northwest or California - but this could also be way off too. Not - White flower farms either

Dave - yeah I realize that. But otherwise I don't really see the point of even having a list at all if it's only search-able by the name of the company - why not just Google it.

But like I said, you don't need to categorize everything (at least not now) - but it could be made more useful if you allowed searches of the reviews, and also added another category - just one field in the database if that's how it works - that people could just add keywords to - that is search-able.

It's a recommendation feature. If you purchase something from a nursery that you like you can post a recommendation and post a review about that nursery. If I see a nursery online or recieve a catalog for one, I can come to ATP and see if has any recommendations. Also you can search broad categories. I am interested in Hibiscus so I searched and found 10 sites listed. Two of those have 8 recommendations so it's a good bet that they would be good companies to order from.

Only the Lonely is Nicotiana sylvestris, which is available from numerous sources. Some time ago I stumbled upon these folks. They have a nice collection of species. http://daggawalla.com/category...

Yeah - Horntoad, I would use it that way too. I also look at Dave's (which I seem to gather this site is a response to?) and Cornell's "Vegetable Varieties for Gardeners" (which is down for maintenance right now) - which I really like and use a lot as it's part of a University/Extension Service (but helped by the public) - but it does not review companies - or have anything but veges.

I looked at Daggawalla too - interesting stuff but not the site I was looking for. It's one of those ethnobotanical sites. I find them interesting but they usually stress the medicinal rather than the botanical. I often find all sorts of botanical misinformation at these places - not necessarily Daggawalla however as they seem a lot better in this regard. Though they do seem a bit strange in not using Credit Cards (or debit for that matter) or Paypal, which I assume is for some activist purpose. A great bread baker here did that too, but eventually succumbed to big business and started accepting them. I consider it a way to pay for record-keeping myself (but maybe its the big banks that these people are against and not the service charge - which I understand!).

Victory seeds (which I found here) has a species I may try though. It's not the one either. The place may have gone away? Seemed that it may also have had succulents and bamboo too - though I may be mixing up my crazed obsessive searches... I found out how to save a whole set of tabs in my browser now - so it should not happen again. I do remember closing everything thinking I already have WAY too many seeds and plants to grow! I still see some frozen, snow-covered pots in my yard now that never made it to a garden!

Now I just want to find that site - I don't even care what if what I was looking for is offered anymore! I have way too many seeds right now - and soon will have way too many plants again!

Hey - it's a lot like Portland Nursery - http://portlandnursery.com And it actually may be 'The One', but they don't send plants, only a buy-at-place place. But I may have mixed things up in my head, or simply not realized? The pages look a lot like theirs anyway. The nictotiana page is not exactly as I remember it - I really do remember verbage about things not being ready yet (but again maybe that was from another site). I'm going to post on another forum the seeds I'm looking for....
