What's Blooming in September

By LarryR
September 15, 2011

This article is the second in a new series at All Things Plants. On the 15th of each month I'll highlight plants blooming here at Cottage-in-the-Meadow Gardens. I'll have photos and will discuss the plants featured. You're invited to discuss these plants, too, but just as important, you're encouraged to show us what's blooming in your garden each month. There is also a monthly contest called "Name that Bloom." The first person to correctly identify the plant will have a photo of his/her choice published and featured the following month. Be sure to check out this month's mystery flower at the end of this article.

Gorgeous hibiscus, Lee Anne! Thanks for sharing.

How about giving us a peek at the other flowers you mention?

This Cyclamen hederofolium is just starting to rebloom this fall. It already had a heavy bloom in the spring. You can see the seed pods from those bloom, they are spilling their seeds onto the ground.

My Hyacinth Bean Vines are still going strong. Next year I'm also going to plant the white HBV from seed someone has given me. Also blooming are 4 o'clocks, Datura, Russian Sage, two of the Butterfly Bushes are reblooming (yellow and bi-color), roses, Hardy Hibiscus, Rose of Sharon, Tennessee Asters, 'Henry Eilers' Rudbeckia. Gomphrena, Vinca, Cannas, Agastache, Celosia, Indian Pinks, Gaillardia, Sedums, of course, and other things I can't remember at the moment.

Looking good there, Lee Anne and Lynn.

Great photos, all. Thanks for sharing.

Lynn, what interesting seed pods! I think they'd look great in dried arrangements or wreaths. I love cyclamen, almost as much for its leaves as for its flowers. I've tried growing cyclamen coum, which is supposed to be hardy into zone 4, in our zone 5a/b gardens but, alas, I've have had no success with it.

Tee, its great to see someone else growing 'Henry Eilers.'
Do you save the seeds from your Hyacinth Bean? I try to, but sometimes frost kills the vines before the seeds are ripe. The vine seems to be extremely frost-sensitive.
Your mention of the white-flowered variety reminds me that I need to order some for next spring. I'd like to grow the purple and white side by side so the flowers can intertwine.

Yes, I save seed from the HBV. I, too, am anxious to try the White Hyacinth Bean next year. I'd be happy to send you some of these white seeds. I can't yet vouch for them though since they were given to me. I can also send some of the purple HVB seeds any time a killing frost beats you to the seeds.

'Henry Eilers' is quickly becoming a fave. It preformed so admirably with no problems here in its first year. And it doesn't flop over like some of the other tall ones.

A recent photo. I'm harvesting seed pods as we speak.

I had one coum plant and it didn't make it. Hederofolium makes it through everything. I even have some of the florist cyclamen that have come through winter and summer drought for 3 years now.

Wonder if I could some how make them stick to my wonderful wreath that Laura sent me. I planted it with different kinds of succulents and it is really filling in fast.

Thanks for the generous offer, Tee. Our HBV started blooming earlier than usual this year, so I'm going to have plenty of mature seed pods. I would take just a couple of white seeds, but only if you have some to spare.
