What date do you think would work for the 2012 MidWest Gathering (a.k.a Iowa GIG) ?
Here is the place to have a discussion about the next gathering. Where, when, etc.

I'd love to see one in June, after school is out and my garden is a little more lively. Just my 2 cents worth.

June is usually the hardest month to get a date, with the Iris, Daylily, Hosta,, Master Gardeners, etc etc. all having sales, garden walks, and Father's Day. It would be a great time to do it, but it is the most crowded month.

How about mid/later August before school starts? That way they are still doing well and we could dig them up to trade without severely damaging them??

School starts around the second week of August around here. Seems like it was more the first week of September when I was a kid, but apparently times are a-changing!

How about mid to late june before it gets really hot? Kim Thumbs up Really excited to see something here in iowa. I read about all those daylily clubs on here and it makes me jealous that I don't know of anything like that here in iowa.

There are lots of hosta growers, especially around Cedar Rapids, and an iris grower in the SE part of the state. The Iowa Lily society is based in DM and we have our Spring sale during the Flower, Lawn and Garden Show at the fairgrounds. (Varied Industries Building) It's a lot of fun and there are all kinds of plants, bulbs and garden art to be had.

I've met AlwaysWeeding and BookerC by hanging with you fun Iowa people. Iowa has plenty goin' on! Smiling

Kimmer, my parents live in Knoxville, nearly an hour SE of Des Moines. There is a great daylily hybriderizer (Wilson's, I think) near them. I love to go walk his fields while they're in bloom, and pick my plants in person! The owner will go walk the fields with you with a garden fork and a wad of plastic bags, and dig them for you on the spot.

Good to "meet" you! And Moby, loved meeting you at the gardening get-togethers! Hoping I can make it this year!

angie, I have been to Wilson's, Bob is a busy guy. It took me 3 visits to finally find him there. But was well worth it. I ended up coming home with 3 big clumps and he only charged me 10.00. So I think I will have to make another trip there this spring. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I've been impressed at how quickly his daylilies multiply, too. I've already divided and shared several of them, only a couple of years after I bought them!

Ok guys, I'm really intrigued. What do you generally do at your get-togethers? Is it a single day - a weekend - something more or something less? Would love more info and will be looking forward to hearing plans as they come together. Thumbs up Smiling

It is mainly a plant swap. Many folks bring perennials that need dividing or starts of annuals, whatever you have extra and want to share. In the past there have been daylilies, irises, bluebells, jack-in-the-pulpit, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, herbs, lilies, bell flowers ~ you name it. One fall I scored a bunch of Kopper King hibiscus plants so I over-wintered them and brought them to our swap.

We have a potluck, talk a lot and eat too much, swap plants and then talk and eat some more. If there are several people traveling, sometimes there will be a casual get-together on Friday night.
