Goldfinch4 will show us step by step how to make a succulent wreath. When you make yours, be sure to post lots of picture here. It's so much fun to share in the creative ways to use these great plants. Here is a link to her article, Make Your Own Succulent Wreath.
http://garden.org/articles/vie...
The wreath pictured here was done by Chris. Notice anything unusual at the top of it?

Since Sedum and Semps are so draught tolerant a wreath is a very good way to use them.
Come on in and make new friends and have some fun.

Thank you for that great Article goldfinch. I can't wait to see all the great wreaths, topiary and other similar plantings each of us will be making. Here are a few links to sources for the frames, or make your own frame using found items and imagination.

My wreath frames have been used a couple of times. Originally they came with the instructions, like Chris's instructions above to use the sphagnum moss to line them. I did this, and the first summer it worked. The second summer the sphagnum started breaking down and the soil that I stuffed them with was falling through the cracks each time I watered.

The version I have now is my experiment to see if the coir mat is more long lived, which it does appear to be. I rebuilt the wreath frame with the coir fiber mat (you can buy this by the foot in bulk from a roll at most garden centers). The mat has been in there for two seasons already and no sign of breaking down yet. I do need to stuff more semps. and sedums in there to cover more of the bare soil & matting on the edges.

Actually, what I could do for a quick fix is to add some sphagnum moss on the top around the Semps to cover the bare soil & coir mat. Chris's frames I can see are all covered with moss and they look nice and full with the moss to cover up any little spots of bare soil.

I was inspired to try sedum forms after seeing some for sale (pre-made) at area garden shows and by the sellers website: www.livingwreath.com

As you can see they are expensive to buy already made up. You can make them for less, however, the frames are a little pricey (like $25 for a large size two part frame) They are sturdy frames that will last many years and so I figure they are worth the investment and as the packing materials break down, they can be taken apart and refreshed.

Did you see on the other link where they use panty hose for the soil? I really like that idea and am going to try it using Al's potting recipe for succulents. Can't wait to see how that is going to do. Love the Turtle. Chris can you post your different wreath pictures to this Forum? I tried, but it will only let me Split the Thread and start a different one. : (

Diana, since I've only had mine for one season so far, it'll be interesting to see how the moss holds up. I really like your idea about using the coir mat - thanks for sharing that.

Hi Lynn, I'll post the pics when I get home from work. I'd seen the stuffed panty hose wreaths before too. Let us know how that works. Sounds like it should hold up well.

Chris, in the wreath just above the turtle, what is the name of the succulent at the bottom right side? The small one with pointy serrated leaves. That is very interesting, is it hardy.
I would love to see a close up of that one. Where do you get all of your succulents, you have such a large variety.

Sorry Lynn, but I don't know the names of any of those succulents. I got a box of un-named, unrooted, mixed cuttings from Go Succulent. Big box full, nice assortment.
http://www.gosucculent.com/Mer...

None of them are hardy for me but I did take some cuttings and over winter them in the house.

Would you look at mine? If so I can send you links by Cmail.

I went to that darn succulent site and signed up to look at their catalog, and I'm still on the A's......I've wanted to do a succulent wreath or picture for over 20 years, but buying those individual $1.50 cuttings or decimating my own plants (and not getting a great variety) wasn't going to do it for me. Hmmmm....Mother's Day is coming.....LOL!

Yes, I would be delighted to look at your database.

I know what you mean. : ) It scared me just looking at it. But then I thought, 'Just 50 cents per cutting'. That is so doable. Aren't they just beautiful. Did you look at some of the pictures from goldfinches succulent beds on some of the other threads here? She has a talent for growing these beauties. : )

Hi Janet and Lynn! I'm sure you'll be pleased with your orders from Go Succulents. Janet I felt like you, I wouldn't want to chop my plants up to use either. And the 100 cuttings is a great selection of plants!

Thanks for the ID Lynn. I just never too the time to look it up since I was using them as annuals.

Beautiful way to display succulents. My favorite is the one made from cuttings. I have a problem with rabbits chewing on mine & making a wreath seems like a way to keep them out of harm's way. Thanks for sharing!

Angele, did you check out the web site above where she gets her cuttings? It has an amazing variety to choose from. Or just get the 100 their chose tray. I am going to have to try that.
