Terri do you have some fish boxes? They work really well, but other styrofoam things would work too. I never did get around to playing with different kinds of glue to see which would work for piecing bits together. Maybe this year...

Well my intention was to check at walmart and see if they had any. But didn't get to today. I love this idea though.

I'm totally impressed with how they made it through the winter. I was expecting some paint to peel, or the weathering to start exposing the styrofoam, but they look exactly the same as the day I made them! The plants look good too, I didn't lose any which is saying something.

This is one established Jovibarba species (hirta?) and a few of my seedlings. Hoping they'll catch up...

Cool, I'm not the only one making these.

I use the thick styrofoam boxes that my drugs come in. They're more than 1 inch thick. So, if any of you know somebody who gets temperature sensitive drugs in the mail, ask them about the boxes. Mine were starting to stack up and I didn't want to just throw them out.

Here's one a made a month ago:

And here's one I made last summer:

I use old house paint I had extra of, that was sage green and brown. I mixed the two in various ratios and painted in layers.

Tabby, those are super! I hope you'll post another pic a bit later when the plants have filled out. The small one of mine was the bottom and the lid of a tiny cooler that I got predator mites in for my greenhouse. The mites were in a tiny little pill bottle, and there was a cold pack to keep them dormant.

Here's a picture of the very first one I made last year. It's a smaller trough made from a smaller box. The semps have filled it out a bit more this year.Thumb of 2011-06-07/tabby/f17d78

I just can't get over the fact it looks just like carved stone or hypertufa. And your Slate semp is gorgeous with the grey container. Lovey dubby

I *just* got some marble sized, hard hail a few minutes ago. It'll be interesting to see how the styrofoam troughs held up. Or how my poor semps held up.

Oh no Tabby. Crying We had golf ball size hail about 12 miles from us yesterday. This is the 2nd time recently we've been spared major hail. I sure hope you don't have much damage. Let us know.

It turned out to be brief and it looks like there's not much damage. It sure hurt when we went out to pull potted plants under the porch.
My styrofoam troughs show very little damage. Just a couple of really tiny white spots. We got lucky this time.
