This tiny seedling came home with another succulent.
I put it in the succulents bed and waited to see what developed.

I was startled to see this brilliant bloom.
I am guessing it is a Purslane or Portulaca?
Any means of IDing it?

Closer view of the bloom but not as clear as I'd hoped.

Can anyone tell me if this plant is edible?

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! It's purslane! Lucky you! During the winter you should bring it inside when it stops blooming. Place it in a super hot/sunny window/ One year mine bloomed a little bit until January and then when the weather warmed up it went back outdoors where it bloomed it's heart out!

It is edible and has lots of great vitamins/minerals. Super in salads.

When it grows in the heat it spreads quickly.

You are so fortunate! I adore purslane. I keep it in hanging baskets mostly but when in the ground I have it in a contained flower bed.

Grazing ~ that'll keep it in line! LOL
I am glad to know it is edible as I had already sampled it and didn't die.

Boo ~ how does it spread so quickly when hot? By roots, or seeds, or?

I will overwinter it in the GH where it should do fine. Perhaps the blooms will have left seeds also.

Thanks for the assistance!

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing pod you are funny!

"I am glad to know it is edible as I had already sampled it and didn't die."

It spreads by roots. Although it does seed and some grow that way, mostly it's super spreader!

I made tacos tonight and added fresh purslane to it. It's best when it's the new stems.
I hear you about the drought: we are dry here in Phoenix with rainfall being almost 4" less than normal.

Thanks to you girls and this delightful little plant, I think I'm hooked. Charmed too that it can be eaten.

We normally get far more rainfall than your area but to date, we are at one half of the normal years rain. Tough for sure so I see the charm in this plant.

Are all the Purslanes edible? Seems I ready somewhere not all were...

All purslane is edible but you need to watch out for a look alike called spurge. It's limper and doesn't bloom.

DO NOT EAT

This plant started life as a hitchiker in another succulent pot.

It is the tiny plant surrounded by rocks.
