Alexandra,

I just looked to see what you bought from me. OMG I hope they germinated, you paid a pretty penny for all your seeds. I see you won two auctions from Can't Touch This, good luck, and let me know how they do.

Next spring I have bought Nicole's "I Can't Stop". It is a child of CTT and is very beautiful.
I can't wait to get all her beauties next spring.

I just got caught up reading this topic, somehow I forgot to finish reading it yesterday plus todays.

Dragonfly Dawn should be a good size come shipping time; I am juicing it Whistling JUST KIDDING, but we do fertilze all winter so it should be good. I am surprised how it shrank down after it split and was divided though.

philljm said:I got Strikingly Dramatic late this summer from Maryotts - and got some beautiful reblooms from it this fall. It will be interesting to see how my 2012 Maryott's survive. I am sure a lot will depend on how cold it gets here, so far we are pretty warm for December - although we have been down to almost single digits this year too. I have my daylilies mulched pretty heavily with leaves - but now I am worrying because the weather has been too warm - and the heavy mulch may not be so good this year.

But you are correct, you may find that your weather zone may limit you to the hardier plants. Did you contact Maryott's about your problems?

By the way, which direction does your hillside mostly face? North, south east west? That may be part of it too. 4b is a pretty cold zone. ~Jan

Jan:

Sorry I didn't get back to you right away. Busy time of year.

My hillside faces due 'south'. Lots of sunshine. No problem. And for some reason the only problems i have had with any of my plants is the 3 plants I ordered from Maryotts. 'Strikingly Dramatic' has been in the ground for 2 yrs, and I haven't even seen a scape. I ordered it the 1st year of its intro right from Maryott. It was a single fan. It is located in a primo position in the garden. But this year, I think, I will dig it up, and move it.

Also, all of my daylilies are covered with leaf mulch and covered with pine boughs. Yes, it has been a snowless Winter this year so far (just flurries), and on the warm side. Coldest temps in the low 20 degs. This week we are supposed to get snow. Finally! We shall see what Mother Nature will bring us. Fingers crossed! Another unusual Winter. What is Christmas in Vermont without snow? Confused

First of all, 'Strikingly Dramatic' is the first daylily I have seen in this database with no 'Foliage type' listed? Confused
Is it dormant or evergreen? Second, I have never heard of Maryott's sending a single fan. Confused Is this normal?

Susan:

I find this to be strange as well. Here is Bill Maryott's description if 'Strikingly Dramatic' from his website. No mention of foliage type in description:

(Maryott 2010) 28 inches tall, EMRe, 5.5 inch flowers, fertile Tetraploid. Cream (RHS 19B) with purple eye (RHS 187A) Yellow green throat. Cream "petalets" extending from the normal petals. Open form. Strong grower, good branching, about 18 buds per scape and lovely in the garden. You can easily tell this is NOT my form. I love round "bagel forms" . I do occasionally make "exotic" crosses though and this one came from GERDA BROOKER crossed with my own open form seedlings from OFF BEAT. We expect a very high demand for this cultivar so don't wait too long before reserving it. Parentage: G1204A: [E189A (OFF BEAT X CATCHER IN THE EYE)] X GERDA BROOKER.

It is definitely an EV.

I ordered it in June, 2010 along with 'Red Slippers' which also has never bloomed for me, and 'Raspberries in Cream' which died this Spring. Bad luck? Maybe. Out of the 200 daylilies I have planted I have only lost 2 other plants, and that was probably due to the fact that I planted them in mid September. I learned from those 2 I lost, not to plant anything after August in VT. And the Winter of 2010 was a hellacious one with tons of snow and bitter cold temps. "Raspberries in Cream' was planted in July. It just may be, that Maryott's plants and my zone 4b arn't a good mix. I gave all his bonus plants to my wonderful Postmaster who also grows daylilies on a farm. I haven't asked him if they survived, but I will next time I am down in the Valley. The bonus plants were 'orange-eyed' daylilies, and I can only take so much orange in my life. I only have 3 orange daylily plants in my garden. All other colors, mixtures, eyes, pastels, butterflies, purples, blues, pinks, reds, black, yellows, white and greens, I adore.

How did you know it was a EV? should I have known that? I was thinking that people in zone 4 should stick with the dormants. Don't they put up with the cold a lot better than the EV's? Also sense it gets cold faster there you would not want a late bloomer. They don't bloom good because it would already be too cold to bloom during their season? I did notice that Maryott's changed the season on this daylily to 'late'.

If I was you I would purchase from people closer to my own zone. You can get better choices for zone 4 and also purchase plants that are already adapted to the cold, because they are grown there, not zone 9. If you get plants from zone9 they would probably go into shock when they get to your house! Rolling on the floor laughing

I have the opposite problem as you because I need daylilies that are better choices for the south and I want plants that are already adapted to the heat if I can get them. Don't you need to get your plants earlier so they can get rooted good? If they have a set shipping time and will not be flexible then go some where else.

One lady from 'Daylilies by the Pond', (sara), who is in zone 6, she wanted to ship in august and I said NO! My gosh it was 100°here, and I knew they would get over heated and 'bake'. She agreed to ship at the end of September and I ended up doing a lot of business with her.

So, if you do purchase from the south you need time for your plants to adapt and settle in before winter and that means you would need shipping in the spring. If your ground is still frozen you can just pot them up and wait till it thaws to plant them. Green Grin! .(IMHO)

Alex, no problems not getting back to me sooner.

Nice that you have a south facing slope. And I do hope you get snow - it will make all the difference for those daylilies - they would prefer to be blanketed and protected by snow.

I've had daylilies for about 4-5 years now. Initially I didn't understand what Dor, SEV and EV meant - so I ignored it. Then when I did know, I tried to buy only dormants, with the occasional SEV. But over the last few years, with their foliage habit is like is not as important to me as other factors. I find some grow here, some don't - regardless of what they are. Some of my EV's grow as well, or even better than my dormants. Heck, some of mine that grow poorly, i pass them on to a friend 30 miles away, and they are gorgeous (and vice versa). I do pay attention if a hybridizer or seller or an ATP member makes a comment about where a daylily will grow or won't grow.

I figure that no matter what, I will probably lose a few every year. I also like to push their zones a bit, just to see if they will do well for me. But I will admit that I am not spending hundreds of dollars on a single cultivar either. ~Jan

Anja,

There is a good reason I don't ship seeds overseas. I have to add a customs form to packages sent overseas. This requires a special trip to the post office here, I cannot just attach one to the envelope, and put it in the mailbox. My son drives me everywhere and everytime he has to drive me to the post office just to send seeds, I have to listen to him fuss about the traffic. So I had promised him that I would not sell seeds out of the country, just to pacify him. I am 72 now and he thinks I can no longer drive, pitiful isn't it? LOL

Ann and Michelle will send you wonderful seeds.

I have had Strikingly Dramatic since intro as well and like Alex have observed that it is an evergreen. Not listing foliage type on the registration is certainly strange. When I purchased SD I knew from it's parentage that it could be an unhappy grower here. Gerda Brooker died, twice, Off Beat is Awakening Dream X Mask of Time. Awakening Dream also died here and Mask of Time was relocated to a garden a zone warmer. Catcher in the Eye was very happy here for 5 or 6 years, huge clump... died this past winter. Strikingly Dramatic comes up very late spring, grows fine but has not yet bloomed for me either. While it is always preferable to plant in the spring here to give the plants time to settle in I do purchase some for fall delivery. My keeper sdlgs typically are not moved or lined until the mid to end of Oct because I need to get the pods off first, I've done them as late as the day before Thanksgiving - won't do that again though, everything returned fine in the spring, but I have a few extra grey hairs from worrying that I had really skrewed up all winter long!

Foliage type of a plant or it's parents does not guarentee hardiness or a lack of, or even what you would get for foliage types/hardiness in seed crosses. Rock Solid is registered as coming from two evergreen parents, it is a dormant, excellent grower in z4 and produces many dormant sdlgs when used even when crossed to a tender evergreen. When checking parents of plants or seeds I may purchase I consider how the parents perform in other areas not the foliage types. In the case of Strikingly Dramatic I had the info and ignored it. Living here in z4 this is the chance I sometimes take.
Snowing here today, the daylilies may get a winter blanket for x-mas! Hurray!

Jan:

I agree with everything you have stated here. Call it beginner's luck that I have only lost 3 daylilies in 3 yrs. That's not a bad % with the 200 daylilies I have planted. My hearts bleeds whenever I lose a plant. They are like children to me. I also appreciate the advice given to me here. That is why I joined this forum. But if I just planted zone 4b garden plants here, it would indeed be a very dull garden. I am pushing the envelope, and will continue to do so. Guess what? I have found some of the best growing healthiest lilies growing for me are from southern hybridizers. All of Nicole DeVitos's plants are thriving here, as well as Petit, Stamile/Pierce, Gossard, Shooter (both tets and dips) as well as Holley from West Coast, Gaskins and others.

I have found that it helps to buy quality plants with 2 to 3 fans directly from the hybridizer or from a quality seller on the LA (another learning curve). I am working feverishly with seeds to see what will survive the winters here. I will know more this Spring about my seedlings. A big factor here is the changing climate conditions. Our past Winter here was like Wniter's I experienced in Maryland as a child. Mild with very little snow cover. Our Summer here broke all historical records for heat. Landlocked VT was hit by Hurricane Irene last year that devastated parts of our state. A hurricane in VT? And this Winter is acting much like last Winter. Today, we received an inch of snow that will be followed tonight by sleet and freezing ice. Normally, at this time of year, VT is a winter wonderland. I have spent 45 yrs of my life here, and the changing climate conditions is astounding. I also share a joint vegetable garden with one of my neighbors. This past summer was the best ever for growing veggies. It was like the garden of Eden. nodding My point here is that while I know I have to factor in dormancy vs. foliage type, etc, I also have to factor in weather conditions, as well as other conditions. Change is inevitable, and I am learning to go with the flow. The hybridizers are also breeding better plants esp for those of us who live in northern states.
