Cats1, I don't think most of these places that host the online store want the negative feedback. Let's face it, it is not good for business. Once you have a bad experience with a seller and post a negative feedback the other sellers are then put under heavy scrutiny. Some do not care about reputation. They are just there to make a quick buck and then reinvent themselves using another name some place else.
Susan you got some nice ones there with BIG roots and nice foliage.Thumb of 2013-04-12/Hazelcrestmikeb/4db933 The dip!

I know what you're saying Mike, and one of the reasons this type of thread is so valuable. When I first found the LA I thought it was odd to have an auction site dedicated to one kind of plant, but that was 2 years ago... I'm over the 'odd' part of it now. *g* --Very pretty poly btw!

I disliked the verification process with the LA after I signed up so I didn't complete it. I'm sure they have problems with some bad apples and can kind of understand why they were being that way, but I wound up getting turned off.

I signed up for ebay after that and bought some seeds from judydu2 (I believe she's on the LA too) and she was great to deal with--friendly, quick, included nice bonus seeds, and shipping was cheap to Canada--she not only combined the shipping for my wins, but automatically reduced it further because the actual shipping was a little cheaper than what she had quoted. I was brand new to ebay and was a bit intimidated by it (feeling like the last person on earth with internet that hadn't used it!), but it all went so smoothly and was a great experience.

I've only purchased plants directly from growers/hybridizers.

I would never buy on ebay unless I knew the name from the LA, or word of mouth, That goes for anything that blooms. I love ebay, but have been amazed at the different ways people come up with to bamboozle. On the other hand, there are excellent, totally honest sellers, but its sure a buyer beware situation.

I dont remember the verification process on LA. Is that just for the sellers?

Anne ~ I'm going to go out on a limb and ask if you gave a cell phone number to register on the LA? -- When I signed up it was pretty easy but I gave them a landline phone which would be a lot easier to verify (home address and who lives there) than a cell. --I'm just guessing about how verification is done, but I was wondering if it wasn't something like that.

That is what I like about the forum, you can read about other peoples experiences and see pictures. eBay is not that way, I was ordering a lot of plants five years ago but after the thing with the Hostas I do not buy plants.
I do have a lot of notes under 'saved sellers' some go back five years because they do not delete your saved sellers after 3 months like they do the transaction numbers. Without that number you can never get in-touch with the seller or prove you ever bought anything. It will expire in three months, if you purchase a plant in January and it is not there by the end of march, too late and good luck proving you bought a plant, because every trace of the transaction will be erased in three months and your buyer protection is no good either. Thumbs down

The verification process is for everyone I believe (buyers/sellers), but I assume most people pass the first step and don't have to do anything then. I was just signing up to buy some seeds I liked, but didn't pass the first step. The seeds I wanted to bid on were gone before I could have gotten through the verification process anyway.

Cats1, that's what I assumed was the initial problem. I only have a cell phone (not even in my name)--no landline. I didn't like how it went from there though. It's okay though... in the end I have more seedlings from my own seeds than I have beds for. *Blush*

If it helps. I am a buyer and have never been through any verification. I only have a cell phone and no one has the number or has ever asked for it on the LA.

I remember reading that the verification was added after some instances of trouble. I was a bit put off by it as well but eventually provided enough to register. I also only have a cell phone and the area code doesn't match for my address. I've had a few problems with that over the years so I try not to get bogged down.

When I registered on the LA I had to send in my ID or a bill with my name and address because

1. My name does not show up when the address is searched because I was not on the mortgage.
2. My name was not on the landline number
3. I have a public email (gmail)

If they can't verify you through the address/phone and you have a public email such as yahoo, hotmail, gmail then they require proof of who you are. I appreciate that they do that to try and keep scammers off of there. There are plenty of BUYING scammers, as well as, SELLING scammers so this is why they do it for both buyers and sellers.

Random question for all of you:

I purchased some seeds from a very nice, very generous seller on the LA. One of the packets was left out of the order but he still sent a bunch of bonus seeds along with it. These were from a cross I really wanted so I definitely want them still but I am having a hard time crafting an e-mail that is both appreciative of his prior, and current generosity, but also conveys how much I would still like the seeds I paid for, without sounding like a petulant child. Thoughts or ideas?

If you bid on the seeds, and won, I would not care how many bonus seeds they sent, I would write and say you received your seeds and they look very nice, but 'such and such, you won, were not in there. I would not mention the bonus seeds at all up front.

I'd just send an email to them and say something along the line of: I am very happy with my seeds and all the bonus seeds but I seem to be missing a package of XYZ. Since they are one of the packs that I really really wanted, would you mind checking to see if they got left out of my shippment??

I sold seeds last year and each auction listing was for multiple packs of seeds. I checked, rechecked and checked again but I still got confused sometimes, so it's a very easy thing to do. Those little packs can slip out of your hand very easily. I can not imagine anyone getting upset over you asking for the seeds that you puchased.

Now, there's always the possibility that your pack of XYZ got put into the wrong envelop. If this happens to be the case, the seller may not have another pack of XYZ to send you. In this case, they'll probably offer a substitute or refund. THis is another thing that can happen really easily.

Hope this helps you, Mona

Nice dip Mike, I love that daylily and it was one of the first that I bought-(dip) and as it turned out it was one of the last also (the tet).

I recently won a beautiful daylily from LALAMBCHOP!! It was DOUBLE IMAGE, I love this flower! No one bid against me so I got it for the base price.

Also I got, SPACECOAST BEHAVIOR PATTERN. Whoohoo!

This is my order that came last week, she certainly is a good seller! Hurray! Hurray!

I was looking thru the seedlings today on the LA. There is the seedling section, and the unbloomed seedling section. Valleydan ( Dan Bachman) had most of the seedlings listed in the seedling section. It looked like he had some nice seedlings, until I realized he was putting up pictures of the parents. In the listing, he states that no picture of the actual seedling is available Confused Angry Thumbs down
That really is disappointing. He needs to put them in the unbloomed section or show the picture IMO. If its worth selling, isnt it worth a picture.

This was my first and probably last time I'll buy from the LA. I have to say that there really are some good honest vendors there but there are also the other kind that have completely soured my experience. I bought a fair bit of seeds and was VERY pleased with what I received from certain people but other vendors: a) didn't send some of the seeds I paid for and got angry at me for even suggesting that they may have made a mistake b) sent me seeds that were obviously dried husks and disintegrated in the package c) completely rotten d) the vender can't count (paid for 10 seeds and got 4). I have only received one of the plant shipments so far and can only comment on that one but the picture below says it all. These were soaked for 4 days because they were so dried and shrivelled up. It will take a few years in my zone for these to recover and start to grow well. I had also asked for the plants to be shipped late April / early May as it's too cold and wet to plant here earlier and these were received the first week of April. I had to pot them and since I don't have a greenhouse they are being starved for light till I can get them outside. I can only hope the other plants I bought are better.
