It's based on how lengthy the comment is. A 1 or 2 line comment isn't going to get an acorn usually. It has to be more of a paragraph length to warrant the acorn.

How do we know if we have received an acorn for a comment Dave? I can't find anything in the system messages about acorns being recieved for comments, I have left several comments which I think are useful and 'lengthy'.

If people could see they received an acorn for their comments they might be more willing to leave them.

I should add a note to the system messages. For now it either awards the acorns or it does not, but it doesn't tell the user which happened.

Go to your profile and click on the number beside 'system messages' If you submit a comment it shows up as a data proposal. If you already know you left a comment then you know what the data is and what the acorn is for. I tip my hat to you.

Susan, that only gives database proposals for edits or images approved, not comments. When adding several photos of different stages of a plant or different plants, and proposing edits as I'm doing at the moment it's impossible to keep up with added acorn totals.

The comments I leave show up straight away.

Apparently one can just copy and paste the same comment on every plant in the same genus to get credit.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

Yeah, it's true... not horribly helpful, either.

If someone does that I'll probably just delete them all. We have no use for the same comment copied and pasted all over the place.

Moreover, we have parent/encyclopedia pages for information that applies across a whole genus.

Wow! Lots of action here while I was out playing Vivaldi's "Gloria".
Calif_Sue - that quote sounds like a comment from 'Allan P. McConnell'. LOL

And here I was trying to keep my comments brief and to the point.

Ok, *Blush* I had to go back and re-read the system messages. I also clicked on 'comments' under 'Plant Database Contributions' and neither one said anything about an acorn or partial acorn for the comment. The one I thought I got the acorn for was really for a 'data proposal.' So basically I cannot see where I have been given any acorns for comments. Blinking
So, I guess it's a good thing you brought this up. Thumbs up

Win-Win. Wonderful idea. Maybe more contests like this in the future?

I've been pretty lax about taking time to surf the site. New Year's Resolution is to "get around" and take and post some pictures of Southwest plants. Wish I liked them a little more!
