Allison, you have done a magnificent job in instructing. I have had success rooting in water, and my question is now that I have threads of little roots coming down from the stem, can I plant them in a mix in a pot now? They have new growth on them as well. Also, I am a huge hummingbird lover and someone just gave me a book called "He saw a Hummingbird". You should read it. I live for these little guys coming back each year. My mother was so lucky, when she was alive she lived in San Diego and had them all year long. Here in Iowa, I live for them to come back to visit. I believe mine are busy speaking Spanish in South America now! Here's a pic of 'my little guy'........Marti

the only reasons I don't like rooting in water .. some tend to rot.. but if lucky enough that they do not and you are growing roots .. sometimes it is hard for them to transition into soil.. they might not take .. I did find to leave the soil wetter for a few weeks to make it easier to adjust to being in soil.. but they might rot doing that as well.. it's tricky and I have had mixed results doing that

I would rather take a new cutting off the one living in water and root it in soil... I personally have better luck doing it that way..

if the cutting living in water is big enough you can do one of each.. cut it in half and see where they go.. better to have backup in my opinion

Allison, what is your recommendation for the soil to root my water coleus's in now? Should it be perlite, vermiculite, or go straight to a seedling potting soil?

any of these above will work.. vermiculite will stay on the wetter side
