How To Turn an Aquarium into a Terrarium

By threegardeners

There seems to be a lot of mystery involving terrariums. Mention one and people run away in fear. I don't know why, it's really quite simple. Let me show you.

Lee Anne: Wow, that is a very large terrarium and it sure sounds like a lot of work went into the change over from aquarium to terrarium ... great job! I like how you placed the smaller aquarium with fish inside the large terrarium. I've always enjoyed terrarium gardening and I have a few. One is an old hexagonal fish tank that my friends son gave me and then I have a 10 gal fish tank planted up, as well as a couple of jars with lids. Terrariums require so little care once they are planted ... it's a fun way to garden!

This is a glass jar terrarium that got broken when I moved recently. I hope to find a replacement glass container to fit the base and lid:

And, a 10 gal aquarium/terrarium:

Yes, thanks for the tutorial.
I usually run away in fear because I remember them from the 70s and they were almost always FULL of so much humidity that they looked seriously untidy.

We have lots of humidity down here in Florida and I rarely ever have to water the terrariums. The humidity does build up in the enclosed containers so I raise or remove the lids every so often to allow for fresh air to circulate ... otherwise I'd have rotting plants.

Yes, definitely reminiscent of my younger days, and they appear to be making a serious comeback. I was at a plant trade show yesterday and there were a few of them in evidence,

I guess I had a terrarium and didn't even know it. I have a begonia and a small fern in one of my aquariums and they seem to like it pretty wellI try not to overwater...
This was a very good article. Thank you...

Has anyone tried to grow vegtables or herbs in a terrarium? and if so how? I have a few fish tanks gathering dust. Thanks Lazzar

Herbs. I never thought of that, Lazzar, but what a novel idea for herbs, particularly this time of year. Thanks.
