Team Containers or Team Ground?

By Trish
February 5, 2012

This week the topic is container gardening. Team Containers love to utilize containers, and Team Ground would rather just use the ground. Share your experiences with us!

I have lots of very large pots. My yard is amended on top of limestone outcropping, and not much room for good soil. It's a constant struggle.

Thanks Jo Ann. They looked like one that I was trying to find an ID for. I ended up posting a photo on the ID thread and some people have now identified it. Have a look and see if it's the same;

Nope, those are alstromarias. Mine were Asiatic lilies. I got the collection from White Flower Farm many years ago. I would only trust WFF with bulbs tho.Their plants are awful unless you drive to CT. and pick out what you want.

I truly do a lot of both.
If it's zone 5, it goes in the ground.
But SO MANY WONDERFUL things are zone 6+!
SO I fill containers, set them about outside, and winter them in the basement.
Lots of lugging, but I'm committed.
Or maybe should BE commited.
Either way, I love my plantbabies!

Problem 1: Florida soil is very sandy and dries-out as soon as the water drains-away.
Problem 2: Florida sunshine will bake any containers dry in a day or two.
Problem 3: Water costs money and runs-off where we don't need it.
Normal solution: Run the irrigation every-other day, rain or shine to keep things alive when it's hot.
Our solution: Plants can grow inside large pots sunk into the ground and covered by mulch.
Solves problem 1 by using store-bought soil which lasts for years.
Solves problem 2 by hiding the sides of the pots below ground level where they stay cool.
Solves problem 3 by watering only the pots so it hits the spot where needed.

My daughter and son in law and I sold our homes - pooled the money and bought a large house which we share. This meant joining garden stuff.
We ended up with 40 containers that spend the years on the deck.

I have always had a garden so needed to plant some favorites I brought along from my old house.
I commandeered the mulched areas surrounding the property as garden space.
I have the best of both worlds here, it has worked out great for all.
