Does anyone grow Salpiglossis from seed? Easy or hard? And I've read that they "may need staking"--- are they really floppy?

I grew them one time, Kew blue 2 years ago. They were easy and not floppy in the garden. I had plan to grow them last year but ran out of space. Will be starting mine around March 1 for plant out Mothers Day.

Allison, where did you get your seeds? Trade or commercial, online?

I don't want to pay shipping to order online, so will probably only buy seeds if I find them locally.

I picked up Salpiglossis Bolero Mix from hazzards.. I copied the invoice from ebay for the others.. seeds were expensive.. shipping cheap.. not a whole lot of seeds in the packs though.. other then the hazzards.. the ebay ones I wouldn't even trade that small amount of seed

Thanks Allison. I'll look around here, maybe I'll get lucky. It's too brutally cold to go out today- I'm hibernating.

You don't want to start them too early, 'cause they will get floppy. The ones I grew last year (commercial seed....yeah, I paid for shipping) did really well in a large raised bed and didn't need staking.

Thanks, Karen. I was kind of amazed at the difference between putting them in containers and in the raised beds. They do get kind of floppy in containers, even fairly large ones.

My kew blue never germinated?? The Royal Choc. is growing great. I should have saved the seed envelopes. I think it was last years seed but so was the royal choc. Grumbling I ordered a new seed pack from T&M last night and a few other things. Shrug! Big Grin

I have had germination problems Kew Blue from T&M too. Other varieties from other suppliers were fine. I find that it helps to grow them in cooler temps early on, once the 2nd set of leaves form. They will be much stockier

I think these may have been from swallowtail or summer Hill seeds. If my memory is right, they came out of a small envelope. I may have put both the Royal Choc. and kew blue together. Sometimes I do crazy things in that greenhouse. I get interrupted then when I get back in forget what I did. I'm not the best labeler. We shall see when they bloom. Shrug!

Joanne, when you say cool what temp. are you talking. Think I could put them outside covered as long as it doesn't freeze. Say 38-45?

We should be getting warmer soon. I hope this is not another cool wet spring like last year. Summer never arrived untul July.
