Hey Dave...

As you know, there are at least a handful of people here via The Survival Podcast and I believe there is enough interest in permaculture that we could possibly have a forum dedicated to it? Not wanting this to turn into gardenweb with ten thousand categories, but permaculture is becoming a big thing these days.

Just a thought. I tip my hat to you.

I'd love a permaculture forum. My only concern is that it may not get enough activity. But if a couple more people agree to the idea I'll create it!

Well, milk, you were way ahead of me over there. Green Grin! I agree about not making it like the site with ten thousand categories. I finally gave up on that one. I'm not sure just the fact of more categories makes a site any more complete or thorough than having fewer categories that are well-organized and well-maintained/moderated.

Thumbs up

Sustainable living organically, a way of working with nature and not against it in order to provide an efficient economical balance for sustaining a community. Hard to explain. Using all of nature's resources to provide for ourselves and those of our community by working together.

Here's a good link though: http://www.permaculture.net/about/definitions.html

To me it's living life as it was intended.
To others it might be something else.
And I'm sure they can explain better than I can.

Sharon...that's actually a pretty good description. It's hard to pin down since it can involve so many aspects of nature such as beekeeping, growing mushrooms and other fungi, trees, birds, butterflies, worms, bugs, yada, yada, yada...there's no end to the possibilities. You're only limited by your climate and your imagination.

Sort of limited by location too, I think.
It wouldn't work well in a city lot surrounded by neighbors who spray every chemical known to man on their yard and would shudder if they saw a bug on their pristine green ball shaped shrubs.

But in an ideal location, yes, it would definitely be my choice.
And one could probably make it work in many climates, I'd think.
I'd love to be able to try it.

I like to think of permaculture as 'practical ecology'. It is a way of getting people to think holistically when planning their gardens, in terms of systems, rather than just individual components or sequences. For e xample, a rose garden, a vegetable garden, a nut tree orchard. Permaculture puts them all together, in a mutually supportive framework, the way they are likely to grow in nature anyway.

Is that anything like: we raise hay to feed the goats, who fertilize the hay, and keep the weeds down, and produce the milk to feed the baby goats, whom we sell to get money to buy additional hay to feed the goats.... Whistling
