How do you label your daylilies? Do you have a map showing what is planted where in case something happens to the tag?

There are so many types of labels and markers on the market. As well as marking pens. Some use computer labels they make themselves, some use mini blinds.

These are my favorite ways to mark plants. I have no interest in any of these companies - but I do like their products. They have worked well for me.

I used to make maps, until I started using the AAA markers. They are so reliable and sturdy, I don't have to worry about animals or weather breaking them. The AAA labels I bought 10 years ago still look great.

Here, you can see how the AAA markers look in a planted bed http://northernexposuregarden.... and how the markers are put together. The AAA marker label attaches to the plastic plate shown in these images. You could also use this plate with a self-made label.

AAA does not have a website, but you can see info on them here

Another type of label I use is Impress-O-Tag. http://www.amekron.com/ I use them with landscape staples as markers when I plant seed, and also wire them to the Simply Elegant stakes to mark perennials. I use them for new daylilies. I will usually wait a year to order an engraved tag just in case the new daylily does not live through the winter. You can write on both sides of the tag. Use one side for the plant name, the other side for a few notes.
Here you can see an Impress-O-Tag impaled on a Simply Elegant stake.

I also use Impress-O-Tags for notes about a seedling. For this seedling, I have a AAA marker, then Impress-O-Tags tucked under it with notes on fertility, dormancy, color description. That way when I am out in the garden, the info is right there. I do seedlings on a small scale, so this might not work so well if you select 500 a year.

Sometimes I use the plastic nursery type labels and put them over one of the stakes. I always put the writing side DOWN so that it does not fade. Sharpie Marker will last 2-3 years this way. Sometimes I even put them under the mulch so that there is less chance of the plastic breaking over winter. I also use these, with green plastic, stretchy garden ribbon to attach to fans when I give a daylily to someone, or send it in the mail.

I always take a photo of the tag before taking a photo of a flower so I can label the images. That is why I happened to have photos of the tags that Dottie Warrell uses. She uses this smaller one for single plants, and other perennials. Her husband makes them. The wire is coated, and stiff enough to push in the ground, but will bend enough to make the "curl" at the top to hold the tag. I am not sure, but I think the tags are cut from siding material. Then, she uses a labeler to make the labels.
Thumb of 2012-02-26/daylily/ad348f
In the sales area, she uses tall wooden stakes, and makes a larger sign for them. The signs are perhaps 4"x6" with the name stenciled on.

Curt Hanson uses aluminum cans to make labels for seedlings and other plants that he does not have an AAA marker for. He cuts neat ovals out of the sides of the can, then impresses the information on them, and uses a small home made wire down through it for the stake. You never see weeds in Curt's daylily beds - but sure enough, when I went looking for a photo to show his tags, the best label photo has a weed in it! Hilarious!

Last year I purchased from Image Supply a Brother P-Touch PT-1880 label maker that is battery operated and therefore very portable, and it uses the TZ 3/4" tape that is laminated so it holds up and does not fade in the garden for many years. And I also purchased a large supply of the EON markers too. It was a bit of an initial investment, but I do not regret it and it has really paid off for me.

And I also make maps of my beds, which is very useful to me when planning where I will plant things and what I am going to remove. I don't have any pictures of my daylily bed maps, but here is one for one of my iris beds,

Thumb of 2012-02-26/Betja/c1368f

I am sooooo glad I switched over to this marker system, as I never could seem to keep up with rewriting faded names, plus I used to break the white plastic markers that I used to use when I got into my beds. This system works beautifully for me, and the only place I don't use the EON markers is my front iris beds that are on a slope, as I'm worried I might just hook my toe on one when I'm plowing through one of the beds and go tumbling down the slope, breaking many irises as I go. Out there I bury those white plastic markers you can get at Home Depot, plus I have a very detailed map. My maps have saved me many times, so I will always make those.

All new plants -

Plastic tag on left side of the plant, tilted so I can see the name while standing. Training lesson day one when I have a new helper!

AND

one tag underground 'just in case' which can be found when the plant gets dug up

ONLY pencil is used these days. Ask me why!

Not a lover of labels that can be seen in a garden for pics, and they are expensive when you have 1000 plants!

Guess what I am doing today? Yup writing labels for bags of seedlings. You guys got me wanted to start some indoors. A few choice ones now have wet paper towels in baggies with seeds. Bought some aluminum roasting pans for planting.

Formal beds are charted on the computer. Thank goodness some were printed out over the years for when I had computer crashes (yes with external backup which didn't help with many things). Didn't know I had lost them until I went to move and replant things last fall. Grrrrr....

I use the 11.5" zinc metal plant markers I buy on the LA. I go to Plantstep and print out Avery WEATHERPROOF labels (Avery 5520) on the LASER printer. This does not work for inkjet. A red dot is added for any cvs shipping from the south as these are potted for a yr. I just printed labels for new cv's coming in the spring so that they are ready when plants arrive.

Edited to add I'm switching to the Kincaid stainless steel markers this year as they're much sturdier.

I sometimes buy engraved markers for gift plants which I buy here:

Love the map idea. My yard is really small, but my brain's capacity to remember the new ones is fading fast. Rolling on the floor laughing Mapping would help. I leave on the stretchy plastic label from the supplier, have some EON markers, and do remember where the older, unlabeled ones are planted. Juli, the facedown idea is good, too. Much of my Sharpie names on the EONS have faded. Fortunately, most still have enough to tell and I can overwrite with a #2 pencil. Then, make maps, maps, maps...

Teresa, I think most people just put daylily name, hybridizer, and year. What I put on mine is

Ex:

ABILENE LILLIAN
Maddox 2009
25" Tet 5" EM Ev Re

I usually use the 18 font ( which usually makes it 17.5) on the cultivar name in bold and just leave the rest of it at whatever font it makes it automatically and not in bold. I also center it.

I use the brother P-touch labeler and use the 1" black on white tape. I use the 11.5" zinc ones like pictured above.

Betty's maps are truely amazing. But so far at least I have moved those daylilies around so much that I never did get around to doing maps. In fact this past fall I mapped my tall bearded iris and thought about doing the daylilies but never did. And the iris maps are just really crude drawings with the names written in.

I use markers but I am really low tec for sure. My markers are white eight inch long plastic plant labels that I write names on in industrial markers. Usually last about three years and fade. This past fall, I redid all the daylily markers in all the beds so they should all be fine for a while now. I just went around one daylily section after another until I got it all done.

I do my iris the same way with the same white plant markers and no fade pen.

I use the everlast metal markers, with the brother labels. Can't remember what size. I just have cultivar name on mine. Although I'm probably going to be adding ploidy, since I'm getting too many to remember on them all. I also use a map as backup in case the squirrels move one of the markers. Comes in handy since in the winter they seem to be bored and move them a lot. Grumbling I find for the money this is what suits me best. I would love to get the engraved markers one day. In the seedling beds I use the mini blind markers with pencil, since they are largely temporary. I write the cross # on both sides and in the part that will go in the soil. That way if the sun should fade it or it gets broken off I still will have my info. I find the pencil doesn't fade as much as permanent marker.
It's my cats world, I'm just here to open the cans.

Tink, I have the Eons markers and using the Brother's laminated 1inch tape. I am hoping it last a few yrs before fading. I do want to add the ploidy because of making crosses. I friend has the * on tets. I like the idea of using BOLD only on the name. I have seen it on all lines but I like the look of yours.

I also use Eon markers with Brother labels. So far they have worked great. Have only mapped seedlings. I have had most of my daylilies for so long that there is no need to map them. I know where they all are.

I have used the tall metal markers with Brother Labels with TZ tape since 2006 and none have faded at all. These are used on the named hybrids, not seedlings unless they happen to be a really special seedling. They still look basically new. The metal markers do corrode a bit under the soil and I figure this is from the salt in the fertlize. As a backup, in case of squirrels or grandchildren, I have been putting a seed tag that I buy that has a coating to prevent mold with all info down under the soil in my pots.

On the my seedlings, I still use the mini blind with #9 pencil lead to write on the blind. I have these that are 6 years old and still good. I will add that the new cheapier blinds do not hold up like the older heavier plastic blinds do. I don't know how long the new blinds will last since I have only used them for a year or so. I sure hated to run out of the older blinds. Sometimes cheap is not good!

I purchased some "weatherproof" labels this month. These are address labels to print on from my PC. This is to take the place of writting labels for hours when seedlings are growing and I have 20 pots of the same plant, I can hit the old print button and BAM! it's printed and all I have to do is stick them to the mini blind. I also will put a label on the back on the mini blind that has my name and phone number and email address on the plants that I intend to sale.

I have never used these inkjet printable labels before. It's something I researched online and decided to try. I will know more as the summer goes by to see if they really are "weatherproof".

Blessings to all, Mona

Hi Mona,

I use the 'waterproof' address labels to label my daylilies and they work great. But, you do need to use a laser printer, not an inkjet. At least that's been my experience..... I too, use the plastic mini blinds with pencil for my seedlings--I got mine for really cheap at a garage sale. My main problem with them is being able to see what the cross is when I go to take a photo. So, last year I bought some pvc conduit and cut it into 2' sections and stuck a label on it--worked a little better. I just did this at the beginning of each new cross. It would probably work great if I didn't have my seedlings so close together that it's still hard to tell which row a bloom belongs to :~).

For those who do use the Ptouch labelers, if you check ebay and amazon, a lot of times you can find a great price on the tape. I have gotten it as low as $8.00 and that was the extra strength adhesive. Most of the time it's a little more, but it's still cheaper than buying it at the store. Most of the sellers ship them out quickly and I get them within 2-3 days.
