I picked up 3 little chicks (guesstimate about 3 weeks old?) today off of Craigslist. Mom is going to be out of town, dad had no interest in taking care of them/cleaning them, kids are too little. They didn't remember what kind of chicks these were other than eggers rather than meat birds and they're not bantams. They're supposed to lay brown eggs.

There's 2 different kinds. Two are the brown speckled ones, 1 is the buff colored. Any ideas?

I might be able to hazard a guess when they are older. There are several breeds of buff colored chickens that lay brown eggs and lots of brown speckled ones too. Keep posting pictures as they feather out.

I like the chick portrait in the first shot!

Is that a little boy? I saw that the comb was kind of pronounced on the two brown speckled babies, but not as much on the the solid buff baby.

I agree with porkpal, they're too small to guess their breed, and then they may be cross bred. Some of my cross breds are really neat, and often lay well, as they have hybrid vigor. Usually, the comb begins to develop earlier on the roosters.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

I guess I'll just have to go over there & look at what they have (the feed store the people had bought them from). Why would they buy straight runs for eggers? Odd..

'cause they're cheaper. And sexing chicks is a skill that few people master.

Let us know what the breed options are.

actually, s/r & pullets are the same price at most feed stores I've found. I'll head there this afternoon & see what they got. Tomorrow's uberbusy & they're closed on Sundays.

EDIT: Ok, went to the feed store. The two mottled ones are "New Hampshires" and the one that's mostly all yellow is a "Buff Orpington". They were $3.50 / ea

Buff Orpington: http://www.backyardchickens.co...

Looks like they're all pullets. The New Hampshires will start producing eggs at like 5-6 months and the buff is either an egger or a meat bird. Smiling Only problem is that I don't eat that many eggs and DH doesn't eat eggs at all. Maybe I can give 'em to family like once a week? At least I know that they're 100% organic!
