Great Idea! in How To Deter Wasps

I was doing some research about wasps last year because we had a problem with them building a nest under our breezeway. I found that if you make a fake wasp nest, it will keep them away because wasps are territorial and they will think the territory is occupied. All I knew is that it should be round and gray, so I balled up a grocery bag and covered it with weather resistant duct tape. I broke the hook off a coat hanger so I could hang it. It worked like a charm all summer: no wasps, no pesticides!

I'm always afraid of accidentally killing bees instead of wasps, but being allergic, I can't take the chance. I'm going to have to try this! I have like 3 different kinds of wasps that hang out at my house. I usually use a wasp trap, but I don't like having them hang all over the place. However, your nest there looks more like a hornet's nest than a wasp's nest. Do you think this would work for paper wasps too? Mud-daubers' nests look totally different.

Thank you, I do recall seeing mud divers the year before but not last year. There was one really aggressive wasp who was building a nest near garage and he was so mad when he saw this he was crawling all over it and buzzing real loud. I took a flyswatter and took him out, I had to. He was the only one that thought my garage was his territory. After that it was total peace. I loved it.

You know, I really don't mind them being there UNTIL they get so territorial they decide YOU are the enemy. That's when we begin having problems with one another. I'm perfectly willing to share my space & let them do their thing as long as they let me do mine. It's when they get other ideas that the trouble starts.

I think I do remember reading that somewhere--good to know it really works, congrats! Another thing I read is that if you paint the ceiling sky blue, they think it's the sky, so they won't build on it.

I agree with Toni; that looks like a hornet nest to me. Will a fake hornet nest keep away paper wasps? Cause that's mostly what we have here, that and yellow jackets. Funny, those yellow jacket traps work great for yellow jackets, but the darn paper wasps just walk right out of them!

Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

You can buy plastic wasp nests for about $3. for a pk. of 2 at Walmart and they work great!!

We even took a couple with us when we went camping, hung one on the trailer and one some distance away in a tree.

I'm very surprised that WM wouldn't carry them there, they come in a flat package with the wire that keeps them open and a string to hang them, I found them inside with the fertilizers, weed killers, slug bait area of the store.
