Now the top: it is a complete and perfect circle, however, it has an arm that then spirals out of that complete circle. The arm moves outside and away from the circle in a straight light for a while before turning.

Swings the arm (spiral) out away from the center circle, so no wasted corner space, I'll bet.
Seems so to me anyway.

Edited to add 'spiral' up there so it made more sense, if it even makes sense at all.

Sharon is right. Designs I've seen on the net leave very little room in the top terminus of the spiral. I wanted the top to be a complete circle before it began its descent, in order to have a nice 12" wide growing circle. Thus, I completed the circle first and then pushed out further before beginning the descent into the middle layer.

A very nice addition to your planting areas! You are brave, doing your first brick and mortar project in full view and a big one besides! I can hardly wait to see it full of bushy plants.

Wow! Lots of hard work there, and a good eye while doing it. Great job! I'm impressed.

Will be looking forward to the soil making and plant(s) planting!

They say "pride cometh before a fall" but I think in this case you should be proud of your work, Dave.

Good going!

Dave, I know this may be a really unnecessary concern of mine but I'm going to throw it out there.

I suppose it's going to take a lot of soil to fill from the center cylinder out to the lower level. Wondering should the day come where you'd need to remove and replace the soil due to compaction or just new nutrients. Dave, how will you dig down in the middle cylinder? I'm kind of thinking if I were to plant that portion I'd put a filler space at the bottom of the center portion. I don't think herbs need lots of depth. I'm thinking of plastic storage containers with lid on. Just empty storage bins with lids. Has this notion of possibly needing to replace the soil concerned you?

I'm going to fill it with wood logs and branches, and the top 12" inches or so will be soil, leaves, compost and straw. Hugelkultur beds have been made over 6 feet tall so I think the hugelkultur technique will work perfectly with such a tall structure such as this herb spiral.

I can't believe I took this long to fill it with soil, but I got it filled up today! It's a hugelspiral, of course, with wood, bones and charcoal in the bottom. Then garden soil mixed 50/50 with good compost and two full bags of leaves.

Thumb of 2012-04-15/dave/f07604

Before filling, I took a "top down" photo. You can see better in this image how the top circle was made.

Thumb of 2012-04-15/dave/c3e6cc

I own that it's not a perfect spiral shape but that's A-Okay with me. Smiling
